In 1790, not long after the Vietnamese ousted the Chinese imperialists for the last time, the Vits, launched their own campaign of conquest and colonization, their (in)famous Nam Tin. Having suppressed the kingdom of Champa, they encountered the indigenous barbarians (Man, Moi, as they called them) to their west in the mountains of the Trng-Sn. This is about that encounter, its origins in the dynamics of Vietnamese society, when it happened, the information available about it from various sources, and the patterns of relationship which emerged until about 1945. This material was prepared as background for research which was not possible because of the war. Much more has been written since by others. What is unique about this is that it considers these relationships in their proper context, which is the (in)famous "Nam Tin," or "Advance to the South," which was Vietnam's own campaign of suppression and colonization. That campaign has, now, been completed after 1975 with the seizure and settlement of the remaining "vacant'" lands of the Hill Tribes of the Central Plateau, and the suppression of the indigenous residents.

This book looks at the multiple relations between the ethnographic representations of the Montagnard ethnic groups in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and the changing historical context in and for which the ethnographies were produced and in which they were consumed. There are two major arguments developed by the author. It is maintained that economic, political, and military interests within a specific historical context condition ethnographic practice. This is not however a one-way process: the author also argues that the ensuing ethnographic discourses in turn influence the historical context by suggesting and facilitating ethnic policies and by contributing to the formation or change of ethnic identities through processes of classification. Oscar Salemink describes ethnographic discourses concerning the indigenous population of Vietnam’s Central Highlands during periods of Christianization, colonization, war, and socialist transformation, and analyzes these in their relation to tribal, ethnic, territorial, governmental, and gendered discourses.

This volume examines US Army Special Forces efforts to mobilize and train indigenous minorities in Vietnam. Christopher K. Ives shows how before the Second Indochina War, the Republic of Vietnam had begun to falter under the burden of an increasingly successful insurgency. The dominant American military culture could not conform to President Kennedy’s guidance to wage 'small wars', while President Diem’s provincial and military structures provided neither assistance nor security. The Green Berets developed and executed effective counterinsurgency tactics and operations with strategic implications while living, training, and finally fighting with the Montagnard peoples in the Central Highlands. Special Forces soldiers developed and executed what needed to be done to mobilize indigenous minorities, having assessed what needed to be known. Combining Clausewitz, business theory and strategic insight, this book provides an important starting point for thinking about how the US military should be approaching the problems of today's ‘small wars’.
