For centuries, the Christian world and the scientific world have supposedly been at odds. Those who strictly believe that God created the universe have had difficulty accepting such scientific concepts as the speed of light, the immense distances of astronomy, and the long ages of radioactivity and earth science. This book bridges the gap between scientific and Christian beliefs by asking the reader: What if both sides are parallel revelations by God? An Orthodox Understanding of the Bible With Physical Science is a mixture of Biblical exposition and explanation of modern physical science, including relativity and quantum theory. "I am incredibly pleased and relieved that God allowed Geoffrey to publish such a well-structured, non biased, factual book, explaining how Science and Christianity coexist in our world. If everyone read this book, of course, after having read and understood scripture, we would have a lot less pointless, narrow minded opinions of persons defending biased viewpoints based on ignorance. Not a very Christian thing to say I know, but having read a lot of strange material published on the internet, I can quite honestly understand why there is such so much confusion regarding Christianity and Science. This is by far the most down to earth, unbiased, factual piece of writing I have read in a very long time. Geoffrey is clearly a very qualified and talented Scientist, and also a very fine example of a Christian. He is very careful not to judge people in situations, as a Christian must do, and with great knowledge, explains everything one needs to know based on Truth. I sincerely hope that this book is read and understood, by as many people as possible." Reviews from Stefano, Amazon

Energy in Orthodox Theology and Physics

Energy in Orthodox Theology and Physics PDF Author: Stoyan Tanev
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 153261487X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
It is well known that energy is a fundamental concept in physics. Much less well known is that it is also a key concept in Eastern Christian or Orthodox theology. This book from Dr. Stoyan Tanev--a physicist, innovation management scholar, and theologian--provides a comparative analysis of the conceptualizations of energy in Orthodox theology and in physics, and demonstrates the potential of such comparison for a better understanding of these two quite different domains of human enquiry. The book explores the rediscovery of the Byzantine Church's teaching on the Divine energies in twentieth-century Orthodox theology, and offers new insights about the key contributions of key theologians such as Sergius Bulgakov, George Florovsky, John Meyendorff, Christos Yannaras, and Thomas Torrance. Where do the understandings of energy in theology and physics meet? The author argues that the encounter between theology and physics happens at the level of quantum physics, where the subtle use of words and language acquires a distinctive apophatic dimension. His comparative approach focuses on the epistemological struggles of theologians and physicists. According to Tanev, this focus on the struggles of knowing offers a new way to look at the dialogue between science and theology.

Beyond These Horizons

Beyond These Horizons PDF Author: John Breck
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781937019945
Category : Biblical cosmology
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
"From the electron microscope to the Hubble space telescope, modern technological advances have broadened our horizons - macroscopic and microscopic - beyond anything imaginable prior to the 1930s. One of the most important discoveries of the past few decades is the fact that everything, beginning with subatomic particles and including star systems and conscious human life, emerges from an underlying, transcendent Reality that brings all things from nonexistence into being through a continuous act of creation. All things are essentially interconnected in an entangled unity, which obliges us to view the world as a great hologram in which every aspect contains information of the Whole. This book raises the question of the relationship between that Reality and the Christian understanding of God. Written in the form of a simple novel, it begins by offering an overview, in lay terms, of quantum theory as it has developed since the early twentieth century. Gradually it lays the groundwork for an exploration of the relationship between quantum mechanics and certain key aspects of traditional Christian teaching. Its aim is to make clear that our usual conception of God and the world, in the words of the English theologian J.B. Phillips, is far 'too small.' With the help of insights drawn from quantum theory, we can now see that Creation is more intricate, more interconnected and more beautiful than our forebears could ever have imagined."--Publisher.

Science and Eastern Orthodoxy

Science and Eastern Orthodoxy PDF Author: Efthymios Nicolaidis
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 1421404265
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
People have pondered conflicts between science and religion since at least the time of Christ. The millennia-long debate is well documented in the literature in the history and philosophy of science and religion in Western civilization. Science and Eastern Orthodoxy is a departure from that vast body of work, providing the first general overview of the relationship between science and Christian Orthodoxy, the official church of the Oriental Roman Empire. This pioneering study traces a rich history over an impressive span of time, from Saint Basil’s Hexameron of the fourth century to the globalization of scientific debates in the twentieth century. Efthymios Nicolaidis argues that conflicts between science and Greek Orthodoxy—when they existed—were not science versus Christianity but rather ecclesiastical debates that traversed the whole of society. Nicolaidis explains that during the Byzantine period, the Greek fathers of the church and their Byzantine followers wrestled passionately with how to reconcile their religious beliefs with the pagan science of their ancient ancestors. What, they repeatedly asked, should be the church’s official attitude toward secular knowledge? From the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century to its dismantling in the nineteenth century, the patriarchate of Constantinople attempted to control the scientific education of its Christian subjects, an effort complicated by the introduction of European science in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Science and Eastern Orthodoxy provides a wealth of new information concerning Orthodoxy and secular knowledge—and the reactions of the Orthodox Church to modern sciences.
