Book Description
Excerpt from An Original Church of Christ, or a Scriptural Vindication of the Orders and Powers of the Ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church While travelling the Niagara circuit, in Upper Canada, in the latter part Of the year 1804, as a colleague with the Rev. Daniel Pickett, a discussion incidentally arose between him and a minister Of the Church Of England, on the validity' Of our ordination. Some letters passed between them in reference to this subject, in one Of which, from the clergyman Of the Establishment, it was asked, If Dr. Coke were satisfied with the validity of his ordination, why did he apply to the house of bishops, in the United States, for a reconsecration? This question disclosed a fact of which we were both ignorant, and Of course could not reply to it. The next spring, while attend ing the conference in the city of new-york, the sub ject was mentioned to Bishop Asbury, who explained to us the whole transaction which passed between Dr. Coke and Bishops White and Seabury; and, at the same time, expressed his regret that Dr. Coke had so precipitately committed himself in this affair. Here the matter ended for that time. This circumstance, however, awakened my mind to the subject, and led me to make inquiries respecting the authorities on which Mr. Wesley and others de pended for a justification Of their proceedings in the organization Of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Respectable Methodism
Author: Daniel F. Flores
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666713988
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 155
Book Description
The Wesleyan-Methodist movement entered American history as a fragment of British Methodism. It quickly took on a new identity in the early republic and grew into a vibrant denomination in the nineteenth century. The transitions from the rugged pioneer religion modeled by Bishop Francis Asbury to the urbane religion of industrial America was by design the goal of influential leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Nathan Bangs was perhaps one of the most significant of such leaders. He rose from obscurity to the ranks of power and influence by refining patterns of worship, expanding denominational publishing, and structuring ministerial education. This study is concerned with the development of respectability in American Methodism. It also explores questions on how Bangs and other leaders dealt with in-house conflicts on issues related to race, slavery, and the poor.
