A combination of environmental awareness, consumer demands and pressure from legislators has led automotive manufacturers to seek for more environmentally friendly alternatives while still meeting the quality, performance and price demands of their customers. This has led to many complex powertrain designs being developed in order to produce vehicles with reduced carbon emissions. In particular, within the last decade most of the major automotive manufacturers have either developed or announced plans to develop one or more hybrid vehicle models. This means that to be competitive and offer the best HEV solutions to customers, manufacturers have to assess a multitude of complex design choices in the most efficient way possible. Even though the automotive industry is adept at dealing with the many complexities of modern vehicle development; the magnitude of design choices, the cross coupling of multiple domains, the evolving technologies and the relative lack of experience with respect to conventional vehicle development compounds the complexities within the HEV design space. In order to meet the needs of efficient and flexible HEV powertrain modelling within this design space, a parallel is drawn with the development of complex software systems. This parallel is both from a programmatic viewpoint where object-oriented techniques can be used for physical model development with new equation oriented modelling environments, and from a systems methodology perspective where the development approach encourages incremental development in order to minimize risk. This Thesis proposes a modelling method that makes use of these new tools to apply OOM principles to the design and development of HEV powertrain models. Furthermore, it is argued that together with an appropriate systems engineering approach within which the model development activities will occur, the proposed method can provide a more flexible and manageable manner of exploring the HEV design space. The flexibility of the modelling method is shown by means of two separate case studies, where a hierarchical library of extendable and replaceable models is developed in order to model the different powertrains. Ultimately the proposed method leads to an intuitive manner of developing a complex system model through abstraction and incremental development of the abstracted subsystems. Having said this, the correct management of such an effort within the automotive industry is key for ensuring the reusability of models through enforced procedures for structuring, maintaining, controlling, documenting and protecting the model development. Further, in order to integrate the new methodology into the existing systems and practices it is imperative to develop an efficient means of sharing information between all stakeholders involved. In this respect it is proposed that together with an overall systems modelling activity for tracking stakeholder involvement and providing a central point for sharing data, CAE methods can be employed in order to automate the integration of data.

The Ohio State University has participated in Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) for over 21 years. These competitions challenge universities throughout North American to reengineer a vehicle with technologies advancing the automotive market. This work explores the use of systems engineering practices during the eleventh iteration of the AVTC program, the EcoCAR 3 competition. The document presents the systems engineering process and two case studies implementing the process. The systems engineering process presented is a simplification of the “Vee” and “Agile” systems engineering processes applicable to a high-cost, long-term, prototype program. The process is broken into five stages: Concept Creation and Refinement, Architecture and Metric Creation, Development, Verification, and Assessment and Validation. The two case studies present uses of the process at a low-level applied to a software algorithm and at a high-level applied to an entire project. The first case study reviews the development of a diagnostic algorithm for the automated manual transmission used in the EcoCAR 3 competition vehicle. The team automated a manual transmission and needed an algorithm to detect and isolate failures to components of the transmission system. The concept and requirements for this algorithm are detailed in Chapter 1 before continuing to discussion of development and testing. Testing of the algorithm utilizes a model-based environment. The second case study reviews the construction and execution of a behavioral study project evaluating driver performance during a vehicle to driver transition of an SAE Level 3 partially automated vehicle. Research was conducted in a model-based environment, simulating an autonomous vehicle by utilizing a driving simulator. The project requirements are derived from the applicable parent requirements, implemented, and tested.

Development of electric vehicle architectures requires complex analysis and innovative designs in order to produce a highly efficient mode of personal transportation acceptable to the target demographic. Following, the project development is briefly described, detailing the specific goals for the project and the methods by which results were achieved. Next the paper discusses the analytical and simulation models for each key component as divided by the following systems: battery, charging, and traction. Model assembly and the development of a graphic user interface follows. Finally, the testing procedures for model validation, along with results, and future project works are provided.
