The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the music aptitude and the music achievement of beginning instrumental students who are taught according to the principles of Gordons' Music Learning Theory. Sixty-eight 4th and 5th grade students who elected instrumental music participated in the study. Students were administered the Intermediate Measures of Music Audation (IMMA) music aptitude test. Students were taught using lesson plans provided in Jump Right In: The Instrumental Series. Each student received a cassette which contained the lesson materials. Students received 30 minutes per week of small group (homogeneous) instruction and 40 minutes per week of large group (heterogeneous) instruction. At the end of the school year, students performed three criterion etudes, the first with teacher help, the second was self taught and the third was sight read. Student performances were evaluated by a panel of judges using continuous tonal and rhythm rating scales. Results indicated a high interjudge reliability for the tonal and rhythm rating scales. Correlation coefficients between IMMA scores and the combined judges' ratings for the etudes were positive but low in all cases.

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if and to what degree a correlation existed between the musical aptitude measured by Intermediate Measures of Music Audiation (IMMA), and reading and mathematics scores on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) among sixth grade beginning band students. Two research questions guided the study: (1) was there a correlation between the level of musical aptitude on the IMMA and the composite and sub-categorical performance levels of the mathematics scores on the STAAR among beginning band students? and (2) was there a correlation between the level of musical aptitude and the composite and sub-categorical performance levels of the reading scores on the STAAR among beginning band students? The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of music aptitude on mathematical achievement and to evaluate the most appropriate instruments for measuring musical talents and juxtaposing them with mathematical achievement using Gordon's AMMA tool to establish the connection between musical acumen and mathematical achievement in randomly selected learners. This study presented data that is now available for use by other researchers. The researcher used exploratory designs to generalise, assess, and test qualitative exploratory results, and to see if they could be generalised to a sample and a population as outlined in this dissertation. This research was evaluated in both qualitative and quantitative phases. The researcher focussed on how students of different ages, gender, intelligence levels, and musical abilities reacted to the AMMA (music aptitude test). The researcher was intrigued to see that most of the music students in the secondary school could compose with ease without prior knowledge of composition thus demonstrating an excellent theoretical background, which was prevalent in his discussions with colleagues. Having studied the previous school curriculum, they were exposed to since their childhood in primary school, the researcher could not find any relevant material linked to composition, form, structure or even analysis. Conversations with colleagues in the mathematical department revealed that the same students were doing extremely well academically in their mathematical subjects. This raised further questions for the researcher; was this merely a coincidence or was this increase in academic achievement due to the impact of their music studies? Most parents in the community encouraged their children to attend private schools and went out of their way financially to provide for a good education reinforcing good will and intentions to foster a brighter future for these learners. For students to achieve excellent results, aptitude played a prominent role in their musical development.
