The advances in “omics” technologies have enabled unprecedented progress in agricultural and biological sciences. The synergy of high-performance computing, high throughput omics approaches, and high dimensional phenotyping data with high spatial and temporal resolution have demonstrated the capacity to enhance our understanding of biological mechanisms but also to provide powerful insights into dissecting the genetic basis of complex traits with agricultural and economical importance. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) has become a useful approach to identify mutations that underlie diseases and complex traits and has provided important insights in exploring genetic profiles. However, it is less suitable for quantitative traits influenced by a large number of genes with small effects. In addition, false discoveries are a major concern and can be partially attributed to population structure. Genomic selection holds the promise to overcome the limitations by using whole-genome information to predict the genetic merits of phenotypes. It has been a powerful tool for predicting the breeding values of candidates for selection in breeding populations. One of the challenges of genomic prediction of breeding values with large-p-with-small-n regressions is to develop robust and efficient approaches that accurately predict phenotypic traits as functions of genotypic and environmental inputs. In addition, the integration of multi-omics data in phenotypic prediction would offer the opportunity to understand the flow of information that underlies the phenotypic traits.

In Western countries, cancer of the large intestine and rectum (colorectal cancer) is the second most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). The incidence of colorectal cancer begins to rise at age 40 and peaks between ages 60 and 75. Cancer of the large intestine (colon cancer) is more common in women; rectal cancer is more common in men. About 5 percent of the people with colon or rectal cancer have more than one cancer of the colorectum at the same time. People with a family history of colon cancer have a higher risk of developing the cancer themselves. A family history of familial polyposis or a similar disease also increases the risk of colon cancer. People with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease have a higher risk of developing cancer. The risk is related to the person's age when the condition developed and the length of time the person has had the condition. Diet plays some role in the risk of colon cancer, but exactly how it affects risk is unknown. Throughout the world, people at highest risk tend to live in cities and eat a diet typical of affluent Westerners. Such a diet is low in fibre and high in animal protein, fats, and refined carbohydrates such as sugar. Risk seems to be reduced by a diet high in calcium, vitamin D, and vegetables such as brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli.

The Transformed Cell deals with many of the differences that may exist between transformed cells and their normal counterparts. Topics covered range from malignancy and the cell surface to cell cycle regulation in normal and transformed cells; phenotypic expression of malignant transformation and its relationship to energy metabolism; and virus-induced transformation. The involvement of cyclic nucleotides in transformation is also discussed, together with intracellular pH and growth control in eukaryotic cells. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with a brief description of terminology and basic concepts relating to cancer cells, as well as some comments on tumorigenicity and cell transformation. The next two chapters explore the evidence for and against the possible correlation of in vivo tumorigenicity to in vitro changes in the cytoskeletal system; anchorage-dependent growth; plasminogen activator production; agglutinability by lectins; and cell surface and plasma membrane properties.
