Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study Collection of Ancient Prints, Vol. 2 It has been previously stated (vol. i. p. 89) that etching as a process for the ornamentation of metal surfaces was practised as early as the middle of the fourteenth century. As to who first employed it as a method of engraving in our present acceptation of this term, there has been considerable dispute, and both the German and Italian schools have claimed the credit of its introduction. To Albert Durer, Lukas van Leyden, Daniel Hopfer, Marc Antonio, Parmigiano, D. Campagnola, L. da Vinci, G. A, de Brecsia, has the honour been awarded. Though some of these masters did undoubtedly etch as a process of engraving very early in the sixteenth century, in the opinion of Duchesne aine (Voyaged d'une Iconophile, p. 350), and of Passavant (vol. ii. p. 135), they were forestalled by the master W or Wenzel von Olmutz (?) in a curious satirical print bearing the date 1496, and the title, 'Roma Caput Mundi.'
