Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Fifth Book of Hooker's Treatise of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity It may be well to explain and justify the use of the title Puritans, lest any one should think that this attempt justly to describe the position of Hooker's antagonists begins with the discourtesy and injustice of wantonly giving them a nickname. A nickname it undoubtedly was in Hooker's day and long afterwards, and those to whom it was applied disclaimed it earnestly, in its current connotation. Fuller, whose account is accepted by Neal 1, says that the term came into use in 1564, in connexion with the resistance offered to the stronger action then being taken to enforce conformity. Richard Hooker and Reformed Theology
Author: Nigel Voak
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0199260397
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
Richard Hooker (1554-1600) has traditionally been seen as the first systematic defender of an Anglican via media between Rome and Geneva. Revisionists have argued recently, however, that Hooker was in fact a thoroughly Reformed theologian. Dr Voak takes issue with this interpretation, arguing that Hooker over time became highly critical of numerous Reformed positions. Beginning with philosophical principles underlying Hooker's theology (e.g. free will, resistibility ofgrace), the book then considers issues such as original sin, justification and sanctification, merit and the religious authority of scripture, reason, and tradition. Finally, Hooker's late manuscripts are examined, in which he defends himself from the charge of heresy.

The Law of Freedom
Author: Daniel L. Rentfro Jr.
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532651023
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 187
Book Description
The Law of Freedom: Justice and Mercy in the Practice of Law examines the legal and theological roots of the concept of equity, and the implications that the diminishment of equity as a legal concept has for the moral dilemmas faced by the practicing lawyer. Meditating on the book of Micah, the book argues that the Christian duty asks for both strict justice and gracious mercy, with the prophet's third value--humility--essential for both the individual lawyer and the legal system as a whole to balance strict justice and mercy.

The Impact of Religion
Author: Michael Welker
Publisher: Evangelische Verlagsanstalt
ISBN: 3374064116
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
Late modern pluralistic societies are characterised by an infinitely multi-coloured individuality of their citizens and a wealth of associations and groups. This "plurality", which is difficult to grasp, is welcomed by many people as a source of freedom, but feared by some people inside and many observers outside as a social chaos. However, this plurality is countered by a limited number of so-called "social systems", which are to a large extent characterised by organisational, institutional and normative structures and weight. The overwhelming majority of the contributions in this volume deal with the Christian religion, as pluralistic societies today thrive substantially in Christian environments. Contributions by Peter Carnley, Gregor Etzelmüller, Johannes Eurich, Jennifer Herdt, Admiel Kosman, Piet Naudé, Waihan Ng, Friederike Nüssel, Bernd Oberdorfer, Martin Percy, Stephen Pickard, Raja Sakrani, William Schweiker, Philipp Stoellger, Milton Wan, Renee Ip, and Michael Welker. This book on the influence of religion on the ethos of pluralistic societies is part of a series of ten international research projects with contributions from all continents. The influences of the market, law, science, politics, media, family, education, medicine and defense will also be examined.

Treasures of the Anglican Witness
Author: Chimela Meehoma Samuel
Publisher: Partridge Publishing Singapore
ISBN: 1543757847
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
“In Treasures of the Anglican Witness: A Collection of Essays, Dr. Chimela Samuel has given us a wonderful gift, dedicated to helping the faithful understand the rich legacy of prayer book spirituality by highlighting the contributions of such Anglican greats as Cranmer, Hooker, and Herbert. What is unique about Chimela’s approach is that in doing so, he offers a compelling argument for the importance of pastoral ministry in the Anglican tradition. Interwoven with his scholarly overview he concludes each chapter with recommendations and implications for the contemporary Anglican church. This is particularly timely given the discipleship crisis that is endangering younger generations and the future of the church. He issues a persuasive call for a return to our Anglican roots by way of a proper understanding of catechesis and how to enhance the teaching ministry of the church through appropriate processes of discipleship. In doing so he gives some very practical answers to why we do some of the things we do as Anglicans. It’s rare to have a piece of writing that is scholarly in nature, but also an instructive devotional tool for Anglicans throughout the worldwide communion. His collection of essays are an inspiring witness to the treasures we have in Anglicanism.” — Dr. Leslie F. Thyberg
