It is because I have felt that the supervisor of music in general was devoting too much of his thought to the smaller details, and too little to fundamental principles, that I have written these chapters, and it is my hope that through the publication of this book there may be set in movement certain thought processes which will result in giving music a larger and safer place as an educational subject in the American public schools, and that it may thus come to exert an ideal influence in the enrichment of human life, such as no art has ever had in the life of any people.
