The European Union's policy towards Mercosur

The European Union's policy towards Mercosur PDF Author: Arantza Gomez Arana
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526108410
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book provides a distinctive and empirically rich account of the European Union’s relationship with the Common Market of the South (Mercosur). It seeks to examine the motivations that determine the EU’s policy towards Mercosur; the most important relationship the EU has with another regional economic integration organization. In order to investigate these motivations (or lack thereof), this study examines the contribution of the main policy- and decision-makers, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, as well as the different contributions of the two institutions. It analyses the development of EU policy towards Mercosur in relation to three key stages. Arana argues that the dominant explanations in the literature fail to adequately explain the EU’s policy, in particular, these accounts tend to infer the EU’s motives from its activity. Rather than the EU pursuing a strategy, as implied by most of the existing literature, the EU was largely responsive, which explains why the relationship is much less developed than the EU’s relations with other parts of the world.

MERCOSUR and the European Union

MERCOSUR and the European Union PDF Author: Mikhail Mukhametdinov
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319768255
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
The book draws comparison between MERCOSUR and the European Union to explain variation of regionalism and to expose its limits. The project is based on the idea that contemporary examples of regionalism should be evaluated against several propositions of multiple integration theories rather than against a single theory. In order to systematically explain why and how integration outcomes in MERCOSUR differ from those in the EU, the author develops an analytical framework for the comparison of the two blocs. MERCOSUR is compared with the EU by the use of the various criteria of economic interdependence, economic convergence, intra-bloc size and interest asymmetries, cultural diversity and geostrategic motivations, which are identified as the salient parameters of integration theories.

The Trade Negotiations Between the EU and Mercosur

The Trade Negotiations Between the EU and Mercosur PDF Author: Catharina Lang
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3638645835
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 77

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,3 (A), University of Applied Sciences Mainz (-), course: European Integration, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: During the last two decades, regional trading blocs and intra-regional trade have been gradually built up. Moves towards a liberalisation of international trade have led to the formation of large and increasingly regional trading blocks. Advantages deriving from international trade include political stability and overall growth. The three largest and best-established trading regions worldwide are NAFTA, EU and Asia-Pacific (ASEAN and APEC). Without being a member or contracting party, the European Union already participated in trade negotiations of GATT, OECD and UN and has also favoured Mercosur's process of regional integration from its very conception in 1991. Today Mercosur is the world's fourth largest single market, after the EU, the USA and Japan. Mercosur's aim to become a real common market forms the main element in the creation of an association between both regions. This book mainly concentrates on the bilateral negotiations on trade issues between the European Union and Mercosur.

The Social Construction of Free Trade

The Social Construction of Free Trade PDF Author: Francesco G. Duina
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691123530
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
This book offers a compelling new interpretation of the proliferation of regional trade agreements (RTAs) at the end of the twentieth century. Challenging the widespread assumption that RTAs should be seen as fundamentally similar economic initiatives to pursue free trade, Francesco Duina proposes that the world is reorganizing itself into regions that are highly distinctive and enduring. With evidence from Europe, North America, and South America, he challenges our understanding of globalization, the nature of markets, and the spread of neoliberalism. The pursuit of free trade is a profoundly social process and, as such, a unique endeavor wherever it takes place. In an unprecedented comparative analysis, the book offers striking evidence of differences in the legal architectures erected to standardize the worldview of market participants and the reaction of key societal organizations--interest groups, businesses, and national administrations--to a broader marketplace. The author gives special attention to developments in three key areas of economic life: women in the workplace, the dairy industry, and labor rights. With its bold and original approach and its impressive range of data, The Social Construction of Free Trade represents a major advance in the growing fields of economic sociology and comparative regional integration.

Regional Integration in Europe and Latin America

Regional Integration in Europe and Latin America PDF Author: Juliana Vianna da Nobrega
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3656341141
Category : Political Science
Languages : en

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, course: Debates on European Integration, language: English, abstract: The European integration has been in progress since shortly after the Second World War. Already in 1946, the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill held a speech in Zurich and within this speech he expressed the idea of France and Germany as the constituting countries of a European Union. At this time, the patriotic French press was outraged about this idea. But already in 1949 the Council of Europe was founded, and only two years later in 1951 the European Community for Steel and Coal was created and became effective in 1952. In 1957, the member states of the ECSC signed the Treaty of Rome to start the European Economic Community (EEC) (Schmuck, n.a.). The European integration has been a unique process (Rosamond, 2006, S. 450) that lead also to a separate field of studies, the European integration studies. Even though Europe is unique and the integration process that has been taken place there is unique as well, efforts to compare the process in Europe with integration processes in other regions of the world were undertaken. I will tackle the matter with this regard. This paper will be concerned with the integration process in Europe compared to integration processes in Latin America. My motivation to do this arises from the fact that I am a Brazilian student and thus have a Latin American origin and I am studying in Germany, which is in my opinion and most probably not only in my opinion the most important constituting country of the European Union. It is not only the biggest economy in Europe but it is also one of the few constituting states of the predecessor of the EU the already mentioned ECSC and the EEC. A second fact, which is in my opinion intuitive, is the one what the differences of integration processes are and how those can be explained. The first world with Europe and the third world with Latin America might show different difficulties and challenges with respect to efforts on regional integration. [...]
