An infrared study of the methanation of CO2 on supported Rh catalysts has been performed. This reaction has been shown to occur over these catalysts with higher turnover frequency at a given temperature and Rh loading than does the methanation of CO. A support effect has been demonstrated for the reaction over the supported Rh catalysts (TiO2 Al2O3 SiO2 in reactivity). A key surface intermediate during the methanation reaction is a carbonyl hydride species, as evidenced by a prominent infrared band in the 2020-2040/cm region which shifts by 5-10/cm when D2 is substituted for H2 in the reaction mixture. This carbonyl hydride species can be produced in the absence of H2 by migration of H from the support to Rh. The dissociation of CO2 on supported Rh has been shown to be enhanced by the presence of H2 and impurity boron. Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Platinum and palladium supported on four different oxide materials - SiO2, Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3, and TiO2 - have been studied in depth. Different preparative techniques were utilized to vary metal particle size and change the state of the metal. For example, Pt and Pd deposited on TiO2 and reduced at low temperatures (175 to 200°C) exhibit normal adsorption behavior, whereas these same catalysts reduced at a high temperature (500°C) transform into an SMSI (Strong Metal-Support Interactions) state and chemisorption becomes greatly reduced. Both fresh and used samples were characterized by H2, and CO chemisorption. In addition, O2 chemisorption and the H2-O2 titration reaction were conducted on most fresh reduced Pt and Pd catalysts to further characterize their adsorption properties and to determine the agreement among these various chemisorption techniques. X-ray line broadening measurements were than conducted on all catalyst samples, and TEM was used to further characterize selected samples, especially the Ni catalysts. Metal loadings were determined by Neutron Activation Analysis. Tables 1 and 2 provide the chemisorption data on Pt and Pd catalysts respectively, and Tables 3 and 4 show the turnover frequencies (N) measured on Pt and Pd dispersed on various supports.

The reaction of carbon monoxide and oxygen over supported rhodium films has been studied using infrared spectroscopy. The focus of work was the reactivity of the various CO/Rh/X (X=Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2) surface states for supported catalysts having high and low Rh loading. Under the reaction conditions the 'linear CO' species was the most stable toward oxidation, but this could have been a result of an oxidized Rh surface. A new CO/Rh surface species has been proposed which exhibits an infrared band at 2000/cm for a 0.5% Rh/TiO2 film. This species is believed to be a bridged carbonyl between Rh+1 and the TiO2 support. An infrared study has been performed concerning the possible dissociation of CO2 on supported Rh catalyst films. The data indicate that CO2 does dissociate on Rh/TiO2 and Rh/Al2O3 to form a carbonyl hydride species in accord with the work of Solymosi. This dissociation process is considerably enhanced by the presence of a small amount of hydrogen gas, but will proceed in the absence of hydrogen gas with the assistance of hydrogen migration from the support. Impurity boron also enhances the formation of the carbonyl hydride species, and hence CO2 dissociation, when it is present in the supported Rh films.
