Book Description
The Independent Measurement System (IMS) is a generalpurpose measurement system designed for collecting and analyzing data needed for evaluation of intelligent vehicle systems. The IMS consists of sensors, data collection hardware and analysis software independent of the system under test. This provides objectivity, quality assurance and redundancy to data collection and testing activities. The following version of the IMS supports testing and performance evaluation of the road departure crash warning system (RDCWS) developed for a Department of Transportation Field Operation Test under the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative.

Book Description
This report describes the National Institute of Standards and Technology's role in the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) program, a four-year safety initiative sponsored by the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) to develop and field test an integrated crash warning system to prevent rear-end, lane-change/merge and road departure crashes on light vehicles and heavy commercial trucks. NIST's primary role in the program included assisting in the development of verification test procedures, developing a measurement system, and providing field support for vehicle test activities. NIST used the measurement system to collect data for determining whether the prototype warning systems passed or failed all closed-course track tests and for characterizing warning system performance on public roads

Book Description
Under the auspices of the Department of Transportation Intelligent Vehicle Initiative, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is evaluating the safety benefits of Road Departure Crash Warning Systems (RDCWS). These systems warn inattentive drivers when their vehicle is about to depart the road or collide with a roadside obstacle. To further understand the capabilities and benefits of these warning systems, NTHSA, with the assistance of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is devising test procedures that provide performance data in an objective and quantitative manner. These tests will evolve to reflect new insight into performance measurement and to maintain pace with the capabilities of the warning systems. In the long term, these tests may one-day become part of a standard procedure developers follow to achieve a safety rating similar to the 5-star ratings used in the automotive industry today.

From May 2004 to February 2005, 78 drivers participated in a field operational test of Road-Departure Crash Warning system. The RDCW warned drivers when they were drifting out of their lane or were about to enter a curve at an unsafe speed.

Computational Intelligence in Automotive Applications

Computational Intelligence in Automotive Applications PDF Author: Danil Prokhorov

Book Description
What is computational intelligence (CI)? Traditionally, CI is understood as a collection of methods from the ?elds of neural networks (NN), fuzzy logic and evolutionary computation. Various de?nitions and opinions exist, but what belongs to CI is still being debated; see, e.g., [1–3]. More recently there has been a proposal to de?ne the CI not in terms of the tools but in terms of challenging problems to be solved [4]. With this edited volume I have made an attempt to give a representative sample of contemporary CI activities in automotive applications to illustrate the state of the art. While CI researchand achievements in some specialized ?elds described (see, e.g., [5, 6]), this is the ?rst volume of its kind dedicated to automotive technology. As if re?ecting the general lack of consensus on what constitutes the ?eld of CI, this volume 1 illustrates automotive applications of not only neural and fuzzy computations which are considered to be the “standard” CI topics, but also others, such as decision trees, graphicalmodels, Support Vector Machines (SVM), multi-agent systems, etc. This book is neither an introductory text, nor a comprehensive overview of all CI research in this area. Hopefully, as a broad and representative sample of CI activities in automotive applications, it will be worth reading for both professionals and students. When the details appear insu?cient, the reader is encouraged to consult other relevant sources provided by the chapter authors.

Crash Warning Systems

Crash Warning Systems PDF Author: Lillian Bryant

Category : TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING

Pages : 276

Book Description
A comprehensive review and analysis of the human factors research associated with the implementation of crash warning system interfaces has led to the development of guidelines intended to be used by anyone responsible for the conceptualization, development, design, testing, or evaluation of in-vehicle crash avoidance systems, especially for forward collision (headway warning), lane change (blind-spot warning), and road departure warnings. This book is intended to highlight issues to be addressed and provide guidance in the development of Collision Warning Systems (CWSs). Information is presented on a variety of topics relevant to the driver-vehicle interface (DVI) of CWS devices.
