Henry Pilcher constructed his first pipe organ in Dover, England, in 1820. Over a period of almost 125 years, four generations of family members-working first in England and then in the United States-built Henry Pilcher's Sons Organ Company into a business known for its high manufacturing standards. The institution they created placed organs throughout the United States and only saw its end with the outbreak of World War II. This reference volume, rich with previously undiscovered source material, presents a historical synopsis of the family business. Also included is the opus list of Pilcher organs, arranged both chronologically and by region, and published here for the first time. A vital source for Pilcher organ historians and admirers, this volume offers useful data for anyone seeking historical background or information on specific Pilcher organs.

The African American Church in Birmingham, Alabama, 1815-1963

The African American Church in Birmingham, Alabama, 1815-1963 PDF Author: Wilson Fallin
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 9780815328834
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive history of the African American church in a community which played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. While the church in Birmingham was indeed a spiritual community, it was also the central institution in the African American community at large, providing leadership as well as economic, political, and social functions in a segregated racist society. This historical analysis begins in the period of slavery with the development of a particularly African American version of Christianity from the merging of African and white evangelical religions. As African Americans moved to Birmingham from the black belt of Alabama, they formed churches which were spiritual communities where African Americans sought hope, security, moral discipline, and self-esteem in the face of racism and segregation. In addition, the study illustrates how churches established institutions that met educational, benevolent, and economic needs. The study concludes with a look at the leadershipprovided by churchmen in the civil rights movement, who brought Martin Luther King, Jr. to the city for massive civil rights demonstrations. (Ph.D. dissertation, University of Alabama, 1995; revised with new preface, foreword, introduction, afterword)

Baptists and Worship

Baptists and Worship PDF Author: R. Scott Connell
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725271591
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don't have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same "gospel-shape" that is found throughout the Bible. When the word of God is applied to a worship service in which God and his people are engaged in a worship conversation, a consistent contour of gospel elements and content begins to emerge that reveals the glory of the Christ we gather to worship. He is so glorious that when we behold him, we are transformed into the same image from one degree to another. This is the power of corporate worship (2 Cor 3).
