"Several individuals in the coaching and education community are actively engaging in an action research project. The goal of the project is to implement a system or policy that will integrate a process in the school districts that will inform all potential student athletes of the requirements necessary to meet NCAA academic requirements. The project came about in this formal way because of the need to fulfill a requirement for a Masters in Leadership degree at Saint Mary's College of California. The action research approach was a thorough approach in looking at ways to address the knowledge gap between the NCAA and potential student athletes. I assembled a group of individuals with varied experiences with the NCAA Eligibility Center. None of the individuals were familiar with the action research method. The individuals who participated in this research process were either college coaches who were recruiting these potential student athletes who would have had to meet these eligibility process, high school coaches who interact with these potential college bound student athletes, a board of education member who could give us insight into district policy and or requirements, student athletes who either fulfilled the requirements or were disqualified from the, the athletic commissioner for a school district, a parent of a student athlete who is also in education administration and me who was also a parent of two student athletes. We all came together in order to create sustainable organization change in the district to address the needs of student athletes. For the purposes of this project, four cycles were completed. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Academic Progress Rate and team, athletic department, and institutional characteristics. The conceptual foundation for this study was the Model for Team Academic Progress Rate, which was adapted from the Comeaux and Harrison (2011) Model for College Student Athlete Academic Success. Multiple data sources were compiled to create the athletic team data set. The dependent variables of Academic Progress Rate, team eligibility rate, and team retention rate were correlated against a set of 20 independent variables at the athletic team, athletic department, and institutional levels. The analytic sample consisted of 12,616 NCAA Division I, Football Bowl Subdivision athletic teams participating in 121 public institutions between the academic years of 2005-2006 and 2011-2012. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted at each level of inquiry and for each dependent variable. The results of the regressions revealed that gender, sport profile, and athletic aid spending, per student-athlete, had relatively weak relationships with APR and the fully specified model accounted for 14.3% of the variance observed in APR scores. The results of the study could inform future research about the importance of team level characteristics in predicting APR and the variations between the eligibility and retention aspects of APR. This study could also inform academic support programming and policy making for student-athletes and aid in understanding the conditions that lead to greater academic success.

This study examined the affects of the NCAA's 40% percentage of degree continuing eligibility academic standard relative to student-athlete participation opportunities and the construct of career maturity. The Academic Reform initiative, instituted in the fall of 2003, required fifth semester student-athletes to attain 40% of their major degree program at the start of their fifth semester while 25% had been required of previous student-athletes to be eligible for competition. This 15% increase not only called into question competitive opportunities for student-athletes but concerns that the increased standard shortened the time frame student-athletes had available to declare their major degree program, or projected career path, thus reducing opportunities for career exploration. Relative to competitive opportunities, the failure to attain athletics eligibility for student-athletes required to adhere to the 40% percentage of degree standard was compared to two other groups: student-athletes required to attain the previous 25% academic standard and a group of students from the general student body. The chi-square analyses conducted found no statistically significant difference between the proportions of student-athletes who failed to attain the 40% percentage of degree standard and the student-athletes who failed to attain the 25% standard. However, a statistically significant difference was found between the proportions of student-athletes and students from the general student body who failed to attain the 40% academic standard. The demographic parameters of gender, entering admission status, entering ACT test score, entering class rank percentile and fifth semester GPA were analyzed among the three participant groups for comparative purposes. Chi-square and t -test analyses demonstrated statistically significant findings for the parameters of gender and entering high school class rank for the student-athletes and students from the general student body, both of whom attained the 40% percentage of degree standard. Relative to career maturity, a survey instrument designed specifically for the study to assess career maturity was administered to the student-athletes required to attain the 40% academic standard and the students from the general student body. T -test analyses identified no statistically significant findings between the two groups relative to six variables related to career maturity.
