Mixing and Ignition of Enclosed Supersonic Diffusion Flames

Mixing and Ignition of Enclosed Supersonic Diffusion Flames PDF Author: Roy A. Cookson

Languages : en
Pages : 40

Book Description
An experimental study has been made of the effect of combustor geometry on the ignition and combustion of enclosed supersonic diffusion flames. A short film was made of a hydrogen supersonic diffusion flame within a quartz combustor, which indicated that the heat release was uniform and shock free, but that an unusual shock formation was produced just before choking occurred. Kerosene and methane were ignited in an air-flow of Mach number = 2, stagnation temperature approximately 1950K and static pressure 14.7 p.s.i.a., conditions in which autoignition would not normally occur by adding a very small amount of hydrogen to the flow. The amount of hydrogen necessary to produce autoignition of the hydrogen fuels decreases with increasing pressure ratio. The ratio of the amount of hydrogen necessary to produce ignition, to the amount of hydrocarbon fuel was given. It is proposed that the flow disturbance created by radial injection of fuel is similar to that produced by a solid body in the flow. (Modified author abstract).

A Study of Hydrogen Diffusion Flames Using PDF Turbulence Model

Book Description
The application of probability density function (pdf) turbulence models is addressed. For the purpose of accurate prediction of turbulent combustion, an algorithm that combines a conventional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) flow solver with the Monte Carlo simulation of the pdf evolution equation was developed. The algorithm was validated using experimental data for a heated turbulent plane jet. The study of H2-F2 diffusion flames was carried out using this algorithm. Numerical results compared favorably with experimental data. The computations show that the flame center shifts as the equivalence ratio changes, and that for the same equivalence ratio, similarity solutions for flames exist. Hsu, Andrew T. Pages : 162

Book Description
This thesis offers important new insights into and a deeper understanding of premixed flame instabilities and hydrogen safety. Further, it explains the underlying mechanisms that control the combustion processes in tubes. The author’s previous scientific accomplishments, which include a series of high-quality publications in the best journals in our field, Combustion and Flame and International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, are very impressive and have already made a significant contribution to combustion science.

Studies on High Pressure and Unsteady Flame Phenomena

Studies on High Pressure and Unsteady Flame Phenomena PDF Author: Chung K. Law
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Combustion
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The objective of the present program is to study the structure and response of steady and unsteady laminar premixed and nonpremixed flames in reduced and elevated pressure environments through (a) non-intrusive experimentation, (b) computational simulation using detailed flame and kinetic codes, and (c) asymptotic analysis with reduced kinetic mechanisms. During the reporting period progress has been made in the following projects: (1) a theoretical and experimental study of unsteady diffusion flames; (2) a computational and experimental study of hydrogen/air diffusion flames at sub- and super-atmospheric pressures; (3) an asymptotic analysis of the structure of premixed flames with volumetric heat loss; (4) asymptotic analyses of ignition in the supersonic hydrogen/air mixing layer with reduced mechanisms; (5) a new numerical algorithm for generating the ignition-extinction S-curves. A total of three reprints are appended.
