Book Description
The purpose of this experimental study is to determine which of two readiness approaches, a reading readiness orientated program or a general experience program, at kindergarten level has greater value in the development of reading readiness. A secondary purpose and natural outcome is the effectiveness of a readiness program of a basal reading series and work sheet type exercises used in the second semester of kindergarten as compared with the general experience program which is already part of the kindergarten curriculum. Specific objectives have to do with the effectiveness of the specific areas of the readiness program of the basal series. (1) Is there greater value in giving children specific exercises in orientation, such as following directions in working out a work sheet? (2) Do studying details of a single picture and following a story sequence told by a picture strip contribute to readiness to a greater degree than incidental learnings acquired in the general kindergarten program? (3) Does a child profit more from specific efforts to build concepts of words such as, alike and different, left to right, under, over, on, etc? (4) Do specific exercises in listening for rhyming words and likenesses in initial consonant sounds increase auditory discrimination skills? (5) Is visual discrimination increased to a greater degree by formal exercises in perceiving likenesses and differences in color and in the configuration of simple geometric forms, letters and words? (6) Do eye-hand coordination exercises in drawing and tracing forms of objects and words contribute to readiness? (7) Do naming and recognizing the letters of the alphabet develop a greater degree of readiness?
