A series of experiments that treated auditory perception in humans was conducted. These investigations were at the information processing level and were structured to test hypotheses of sensory filtering, feature detection, the organization of a matching system, and the possible role of the motor theory of speech perception in the perception of speech. The studies include multidimensional scaling investigations, tests of the motor theory of speech perception, studies on subphonemic or distinctive features of speech, and experiments on the perceived order of short auditory events. The results of these studies support the idea that the auditory system operates as a feature detector and that these features may relate to articulatory properties of the vocal tract. Further evidence of features was found in short-term recall of phonemes where the error responses indicated that features were retained where phonomes were forgotten. Investigations of perceived order of short auditory events indicate that similar stimuli are grouped together by the auditory system and, in some instances, are heard in a perceptual order that is different from the actual physical order of the stimuli. Children are reported to have substantial difficulty in complex everyday environments (e.g., classroom). In typical classrooms, children are asked to perform learning activities that often require attention to more than one concurrent task in the presence of task-irrelevant background noise. Demands on auditory and cognitive processes affect how well children understand spoken language in the classroom. This three-manuscript dissertation sought to examine the effects of auditory distraction on working memory and auditory comprehension performance in school-age children with normal hearing. Experiment I examined whether children with normal hearing demonstrate poorer working memory performance in four-talker babble at 0 and -5 dB signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Experiment II evaluated how the relationship between children’s working memory and auditory comprehension performance changes in classroom noise at -5 dB SNR compared to quiet. Experiment III expanded on previous findings by systematically increasing difficulty of cognitive tasks and level of four-talker babble. Together these studies demonstrate that when auditory perception is difficult, higher-level cognitive processing is compromised. The results are consistent with the view that listening in adverse situations draws on a child’s limited pool of cognitive resources that would otherwise be available for speech comprehension and for encoding information in memory. The results also confirm the need for complex listening tasks and situations to adequately estimate children’s speech-in-noise difficulties.

Cochlear implants (CIs) restore auditory perception to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, yet identification of speech sounds remains limited due to degraded or distorted representations of frequency information. Spectral resolution, the ability to resolve the frequency components of an auditory signal, is essential for accurate speech identification but is limited in CI users of all ages. Spectral resolution of individuals with CIs can be further impaired by suboptimal interfaces between CI electrodes and auditory neurons in the cochlea. These interfaces could result from neuronal degeneration that occurred during the period of deafness prior to implantation, CI electrodes located distant to auditory neurons, or bone and tissue growth in the cochlea after CI surgery. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the relation between the electrode-neuron interface and auditory perception in children and adults with CIs. These experiments respectively examined 1) the patterns of phoneme identification errors resulting from specific spectral degradations that mimicked the effects of poor electrode-neuron interfaces, 2) the developmental time course of spectral resolution and vowel identification in pediatric CI users, 3) auditory perception related to the electrode-neuron interface in two groups with divergent hearing histories: early-implanted children and late-implanted adults, and 4) speech-based spectral resolution in children and adults with normal hearing and with CIs. The results from these experiments provide an improved understanding of the effects of suboptimal CI electrode-neuron interfaces on spectral resolution and phoneme identification performance of CI users. Findings from these studies also indicated that cochlear implantation in children enhances auditory system development and drives maturation of auditory perception. Finally, these experiments demonstrated that prelingually-deafened, early-implanted children differ from postlingually-deafened, later implanted adults in both cochlear physiology and integration of acoustic cues for speech sounds. The knowledge gained from this dissertation laid the foundation for the creation of experimental CI program processing strategies to enhance spectral transmission for children and adults with CIs.
