Excerpt from An Experimental Essay, on Mercury: Being an Inaugural Dissertation The difliculty and laboriousness of expe rimenting, appears to have been a great cause of preventing physicians from pursu ing this mode of investigating truth; and hence, the same phenomena have been at tributed to various, and even opposite caus es.' To prove the truth of this remark, it would be necessary only to take aview of the theories which have been advanced with re spect to the operation of the gases upon the human body, in producing disease. Dr. Girtanner for instance, supposes scurvy to be produced by an excess of oxygen, while Dr. Beddoes imagines it owing to a defi cxency.
