The Incremental Validity of Spiritual Transcendence as a Predictor of Marital Satisfaction and Mate Selection
Author: Nathan C. Gehlert
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Marriage
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
The main purpose of this study was to assess patterns of mate selection and the ability of Five Factor Model (FFM) personality and spirituality to predict marital satisfaction. Specifically, the study extended an examination of assortative mating to include a robust, well-validated measure of spirituality, the Revised Spiritual Transcendence Scale (STS-R), to determine if couples tended to match on spirituality profile. Additionally, the study examined the matching hypothesis of Imago Relationship Therapy to determine if a psychological imprinting mechanism may be facilitating the selection of a spouse who resembles one's own parents. -- From the author's abstract.

Marital Satisfaction and Personality

Category : Marriage compatibility tests

Pages : 270
Book Description
This study examined marital satisfaction and its relationship to the similarity in personality traits between spouses. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire on attitudes, traits, preferences and skills in order to explore the following hypotheses. When spouses are similar on basic traits of personality, does it make for a happier marriage? Are persons more focused on interior or social qualities of a mate when selecting their spouse? Does this selection strategy make for a happier marriage? Does a person's own trait of spirituality indicate a focus on interior qualities for mate selection? The results of this study showed that similarity in the areas of spirituality, openness, and agreeableness had predictive power for relationship to marital adjustment across both genders. Additionally, similarity in conscientiousness predicted marital satisfaction for men and similarity in neuroticism predicted marital satisfaction for women.

Book Description
Results revealed partial support for these hypotheses. However, heterosexual men did not demonstrate any correlation between self-esteem and spirituality. Lesbian couples did not demonstrate a correlation between spirituality and self-esteem. In addition, lesbian couples demonstrated a surprising negative correlation between current religious involvement and relationship satisfaction. Financial difficulties were posited as a possible confounding variable affective lesbian couples, where were more likely to be in the lower ranges of reported household income. Regression analysis revealed that early religious involvement was not a significant predictor of relationship satisfaction for any of the couple groups.

The Impact of Spiritual Well-being, Gratitude, and Loneliness on Marital Satisfaction Among Korean American Pastors and Spouses
Author: Emily Feng
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781124852102
Category : Gratitude
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of spiritual well-being, gratitude, and loneliness on marital satisfaction among Korean American pastors and spouses. Although prior research has studied Korean American pastors and spouses' marital satisfaction, there is a paucity in research examining how the spiritual well-being, loneliness, and gratitude may influence marital satisfaction. The present study was conducted with 51 pastors and spouses who volunteered to participate in the survey. Results indicated that spiritual well-being and gratitude were positively correlated. Moreover, loneliness was negatively correlated with spiritual well-being and gratitude. However, spiritual well-being, gratitude, and loneliness did not predict marital satisfaction. Lastly, there were no gender differences among spiritual well-being, loneliness, and gratitude. The results challenge the traditional Korean American Christian stigma that marital dissatisfaction indicates spiritual weakness. Implications, limitations, and recommendation for future research are discussed.
