"Along with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono and John Cage, a Korean-born German composer named Isang Yun was one of the leading composers in the twentieth century. During World War II, many of these contemporaries consistently sought to achieve new styles of music. Yun expressed his musical language by merging Eastern-Asian traditions with Western-European traditions. He applied the Second Viennese style of twelve-tone technique and transformed it in his way. Furthermore, he gathered his childhood musical memories, Korean traditional music, and his lifelong belief in Taoism to create his own method called Haupttontechnik, an example of fusion between Eastern-Asian and Western-European traditions. Yun applied this unique idea and developed his musical skills throughout his compositions. This research aims to illustrate the evolution of Isang Yun's compositional approach by analyzing his clarinet works, including Riul, Piri, and Clarinet Concerto. Although Piri was composed for the oboe originally, the piece contributes significant ideas to Yun's later work, Clarinet Concerto. Isang Yun (1917-1995) is one of the most important composers in Korean history. Even though Yun is a South Korean-born composer, most of his music was composed in Germany and has been largely performed and studied in Europe, Japan, and even North Korea. His music is unfamiliar to South Korean audiences because of the political issues surrounding the East Berlin Spy Incident (1967). Isang Yun composed a massive amount of music employing his unique compositional methods, such as the Korean traditional zither technique, Nonghyun, which is very similar to the vocal technique, Sigimsae. Also Yun created a Main-Tone Technique that was influenced by Korean court music and utilized more practically for his orchestra pieces as a Main-Sound Technique. Based on Taoist philosophy, Yun employed yin and yang concepts in his compositions and formulated his music with balance. All of his techniques and styles of music were designed by employing Eastern musical language and European compositional techniques. In this thesis, I will introduce the concepts and compositional techniques of Isang Yun. Also, by analyzing how he translated Eastern musical concepts into Western musical techniques in his opera, Die Witwe des Schmetterlings (The Butterfly Widow), I will attempt to demonstrate Yun's unique compositional style which resulted from a blending of Eastern and Western musical elements. In this opera, we have a unique example of how he successfully employed his own Korean musical values and techniques within the context of Western practice. Yun rediscovered the value of his own Eastern compositional techniques and then shared his music with Western audiences.

This book examines the intersection between sound and modernity in dramatic and musical performance in Manila and the Asia-Pacific between 1869 and 1948. During this period, tolerant political regimes resulted in the globalization of capitalist relations and the improvement of transcontinental travel and worldwide communication. This allowed modern modes of theatre and music consumption to instigate the uniformization of cultural products and processes, while simultaneously fragmenting societies into distinct identities, institutions, and nascent nation-states. Taking the performing bodies of migrant musicians as the locus of sound, this book argues that the global movement of acoustic modernities was replicated and diversified through its multiple subjectivities within empire, nation, and individual agencies. It traces the arrival of European travelling music and theatre companies in Asia which re-casted listening into an act of modern cultural consumption, and follows the migration of Manila musicians as they engaged in the modernization project of the neighboring Asian cities.
