Effect of Three Years of Health Education on Performance of Fourth Elementary Students in Public Schools in Beirut Area

Effect of Three Years of Health Education on Performance of Fourth Elementary Students in Public Schools in Beirut Area PDF Author: Shatha Ahmad Ismail

Book Description
The primary purpose of this study was: 1. To investigate the effect of three years of health education on the performance of fourth grade elementary students who also studied the core material present in their science curriculum (Program A) as compared to fourth grade elementary students who studied the core health program only in their science curriculum (Program B). 2. To develop an instrument for assessment of the performance of the students in the health education program with respect to health knowledge and practice score, and baseline score. 3. To compare the performance of male and female students on the health knowledge score and health practice score. The sample consisted of fourth elementary grade students enrolled in 21 public schools randomly selected from those in the Beirut Area ("West Beirut and Southern Suburb). There were 240 subjects in the experimental group (Program A) and 240 subjects in the control group (Program B). There were equal numbers of males and females in each group. Procedure The health education instrument for the evaluation of student performance was constructed by the investigator and modified through a pilot study. It consisted of 27 items (14 knowledge questions, 9 health practices questions, and 4 baseline questions). The instrument was in Arabic and was administered by the investigator during the month of January, 1991. The test items were manually corrected and four scores were reported for each subject: a total score of health knowledge and practice score, a health knowledge score, a health practice score, and a baseline score. Analysis of Data The design of the study was an expos facto, causal comparative design. The SPSS-X User's guide computer program was used for analysis of data. Two by two analysis of variance was carried out to determine the significance of main effects of treatment groups, sex differences, and interaction effect. Three t-tests were carried out: one, to test any significant difference between the mean scores obtained by males and females on the knowledge scores; two, to test any significant differences between the mean scores obtained by males and females on the practice scores; third, to test any significant differences between the mean scores of treatment group on the baseline scores. The results showed 1. A significant effect for treatment groups was observed. There was a significant difference in the means of the health knowledge and practice scores, in favor of the experimental group. 2. A significant effect for sex differences was observed in favor of females as compared to males on health knowledge and practice score. 3. No significant interaction was found between treatment groups and gender on health knowledge and practice score. 4. There was significant difference in the means of females and males in favor of females on the health knowledge score. 5. There was no significant difference in the means of males and females on the health practice score. 6. There was significant difference in the means of the treatment groups, in favor of the experimental group as compared to the control group on the baseline score. The major conclusion that can be drawn from this study, is that students who studied the health education program plus the core health material present in the science program, achieved a significantly higher mean score on health knowledge and practice, as compared to the mean score achieved by the control group who studied only the core health material present in the science program.
