Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451856008
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 45

Book Description
This paper explores insurance as a source of financial system vulnerability. It provides a brief overview of the insurance industry and reviews the risks it faces, as well as several recent failures of insurance companies that had systemic implications. Building on this experience and the experience gained under the FSAP, the paper proposes key indicators that should be compiled and used for surveillance of financial soundness of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole.

The Life Insurance Industry in India

The Life Insurance Industry in India PDF Author: Tapas Kumar Parida
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 981102233X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
This book traces the development and analyses the performance of life insurance industry in India, since inception of this sector, using different business indicators over the years. It discusses the evolution and changing features of the Indian insurance industry in 3 phases: phase I from 1818 to 1956, phase II from 1956 to 2000 (known as the nationalisation period) and phase III post 2000 (called the post reform period). The book also measures the relative efficiency and productivity of the life insurance industry in India for the post-reform period, by employing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Despite the fact that the life insurance sector recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% in terms of total premiums and 21% in terms of new business premium collections during the post reform period, the insurers continue to grapple with the issue of profitability. Against this background, the book presents results on the factors determining profitability of the life insurance companies using measures of efficiency and competition. By helping regulatory authorities determine the future course of action in the context of entry of foreign insurers and also in establishing a level playing field, the book has important policy implications.

Book Description
This paper discusses findings of the assessments on International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Objectives and Principles of Securities Regulation for India. India exhibits significant progress in the implementation of the IOSCO Principles vis-à-vis the assessment concluded in 2000. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) faces three main challenges that altogether impact the effectiveness of the supervisory programs for issuers and securities intermediaries: strengthening the supervision approach toward securities intermediaries, improving mechanisms to ensure compliance of issuers with reporting requirements, and mechanisms to ensure compliance with accounting and auditing requirements. SEBI is aware of such challenges, and some measures are currently being implemented to address them.

The book aims to assist life insurance companies in evaluating their performance in terms of their premium mobilization and investment in Government and other approved securities, infrastructure securities, securities approved by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and other than approved securities as per the provision of IRDA (Investment) (Fifth Amendment) Regulation, 2013. The Measurement of Productive Efficiency

The Measurement of Productive Efficiency PDF Author: Harold O. Fried
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195361105
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
This work focuses on measuring and explaining producer performance. The authors view performance as a function of the state of technology and economic efficiency, with the former defining a frontier relation between inputs and outputs; the former incorporating waste and misallocation relative to this frontier. They show that insights can be gained by allowing for the possibility of a divergence between the economic objective and actual performance, and by associating this inefficiency with causal variables subject to managerial or policy influence. Derived from a series of lectures held on techniques and applications of the three approaches to the construction of production frontiers and measure of efficiency, this work will be an essential reference to scholars of a variety of disciplines who are involved with quantitative methods or policy.
