Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of the Church in the First Century: An Essay on the Beginnings of the Christian Ministry The Catholic Church bases her authority to teach and govern on the apostolic succession of her hierarchy. Christ founded a Church, and gave the apostles whom he placed over it certain ecclesiastical powers to be transmitted by them to their successors to the end of time. The ecclesiastical superiors of to-day claim' to teach and rule, not by election or delegation of the faithful, but by a kind of spiritual descent instituted by Christ. In this age of political Liberalism and popular Sovereignty, it is not surprising to find the Church assailed for her oligarchical constitution. Advanced Protestants would have the people supreme in the Church as in the State while the. Modern rationalists would have us believe that our hierarchical jurisdiction is the effect of evolution and the growth of centuries, and that it was unknown and unheard of in the early Church. It is with a View to answering these difficulties that I propose to inquire into the govern ment of the primitive Church, and to Show that its constitution was, in principle, the same in the first century as it is in the twentieth. Rome and the Papacy

Book Description
Excerpt from Rome and the Papacy: An Essay on the Relations Between Church and State A considerable portion of this book was written before the Lateran Treaty between the Italian Government and the Vatican put an end to the 'roman Question' and inaugurated a new period in the history of the Italian Church. The material and still more the moral importance of this event is very great, yet it has hardly influenced to the slightest degree the course of my argument. Its importance is more domestic than international; in the Speech from the Throne the King of Italy rightly declared that the Lateran Treaty completes and perfects the union of Italy. Together with the late war it marks the end of the 'risorgimento.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from First Steps in Church Government: What Church Government Is and What It Does; A Book for Young Members of the Lesser Priesthood It is gratifying to note the interest taken of late in Quorum work, especially in those lines which pertain to the lower offices in the Priest hood. The earnest, patient, and kindly efforts now being put forth in this direction, are bound to yield Splendid results in the near future. Along with this desire to improve the Quor ums and so enlarge their field of usefulness, have come a demand for some kind of systematic out lines as an aid to the work. The hope is therefore entertained that these First Steps In Church Government will be found helpful to all those who desire to study this subject. I take this opportunity of expressing my hearty thanks to all who have contributed in anv manner to make possible the publication of this little volume. May their reward be in the thought that perhaps some young man who reads its pages may be led to a better knowledge and a higher appreciation of the power of that Priesthood which is after the order of the Son of God, and the perfection of that Government which day by day becomes an increasing marvel of the world.
