Book Description
Excerpt from An English-Tibetan Dictionary: Containing a Vocabulary of Approximately Twenty Thousand Words With Their Tibetan Equivalents Has grown much more voluminous than was first intended, and it is nearly a thousand pages and contains as many words as the concise Oxford Dictionary does, or very nearly so. In concluding, I would add, that all through my life my late father's injunction, that I should do something to show my gratitude to the Supreme Government for the free education I had received in my youth in the late Government Bhutia Boarding School at Darjeeling, has impelled me to go on with this work. I thought I could not serve the Government better than by producing a work of this nature, which has taken years and years of labour, which could not be rushed through, even by the most com petent scholars, as the result of a life long self - imposed labour. And now that I have, after devoting so many years, been able to contribute my humble product towards the cause of Education, I feel quite happy and satisfied at the thought that it will help my countrymen in study ing English; and English students desiring to learn Tibetan will also. Tibetan

Tibetan PDF Author: Philip Denwood
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027238030
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 395

Book Description
The Tibetan language comprises a wide range of spoken and written varieties whose known history dates from the 7th century AD to the present day. Its speakers inhabit a vast area in Central Asia and the Himalayas extending into seven modern nation states, while its abundant literature includes much of vital importance to the study of Buddhism. After surveying all the known varieties of Tibetan, including their geographical and historical background, this book concentrates on a phonological and grammatical description of the modern spoken Lhasa dialect, the standard spoken variety. The grammatical framework which has been specially devised to describe this variety is then applied to the written varieties of Preclassical and Classical Tibetan, demonstrating the fundamental unity of the language. The writing system is outlined, though all examples and texts are given in roman script and where appropriate, the International Phonetic Alphabet. The volume includes a comprehensive bibliography.

How Asia Found Herself

How Asia Found Herself PDF Author: Nile Green
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 030025704X
Category : History

Pages : 468

Book Description
A pioneering history of cross-cultural knowledge that exposes enduring fractures in unity across the world's largest continent "Mr. Green has written a book of rigorous--and refreshing--honesty."--Tunku Varadarajan, Wall Street Journal A Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2023 The nineteenth century saw European empires build vast transport networks to maximize their profits from trade, and it saw Christian missionaries spread printing across Asia to bring Bibles to the colonized. The unintended consequence was an Asian communications revolution: the maritime public sphere expanded from Istanbul to Yokohama. From all corners of the continent, curious individuals confronted the challenges of studying each other's cultures by using the infrastructure of empire for their own exploratory ends. Whether in Japanese or Persian, Bengali or Arabic, they wrote travelogues, histories, and phrasebooks to chart the vastly different regions that European geographers labeled "Asia." Yet comprehension does not always keep pace with connection. Far from flowing smoothly, inter-Asian understanding faced obstacles of many kinds, especially on a landmass with so many scripts and languages. Here is the dramatic story of cross-cultural knowledge on the world's largest continent, exposing the roots of enduring fractures in Asian unity.
