Book Description
Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 6: Ancient and Modern, From the Birth of Christ, to the Beginning of the Present Century, in Which the Rise, Progress, and Variations of Church Power Are Considered; In Their Connexion With the State of Learning and Philosophy, and the Political History of E II. The doctrines of Christianity have been propagated in Asia, Africa, and America, with equal zeal, both by the Protestant and Popish missionaries. But we cannot say the same thing of the true spirit of the Gospel, or of the religious discipline and institutions that it recommends to the observance of Christians, for it is an undeniable fact, that many of those whom the Romish missionaries have persuaded to renounce their false gods, are Christians only as far as an external profession and certain religious ceremonies go; and that, instead of departing from the superstitions of their ancestors, they observe them still, though under a different form. We have, indeed, pompous accounts of the mighty success with which the ministry of the Jesuits has been attended among the barbarous and unenlightened nations; and the French Jesuits in particular are said to have converted innumerable multitudes in the course of their missions. This perhaps cannot be altogether denied, if we are to call those converts to Christianity who have received some saint and superficial notions of the doctrines of the gospel; for it is well known, that several congregations of such Christians have been formed by the Jesuits in the East-Indies, and more especially in the kingdoms of Carnate, Madura, and Marava, on the coast of Malabar, in the kingdom of Tonquin, the Chinese empire, and also in certain provinces of America. It is needlefs to repeat here the obfervation we have had fo often occafion to make upon fuch converfions as thefe we have been now relating, or to advertife the reader that the favage nations, who were thus dragooned into the church, be came the difciples of christ, not fo much in reality, as in outward appearance. [at They pi'ofeiied, with an inward reluetance, a religion which was inculcated by violence and bloodlhed, which recalled to their remembrance nothing but fcenes of defolation and mifery, and which, in deed, when confidered in the reprefentations that were given of it by the greatefi part Of the mif Iionaries, was but a few degrees removed from the abfurdities of paganifm.] The pure and rational religion Of the gofpel was never prefented to thefe unhappy nations in its native fimplicity; they were only taught to appeafe the Deity, ahdto render' him propitious, by a fenfelefs round of trifling ceremonies and bodily exercifes, which, in many circuml'tances, refembled the fuperf'ti tions they were obliged to renounce, and might have been eafily reconciled with them, had it not been that the name and hii'cory of christ, the I'ign of the crofs, and fame diverfity between certain rites and ceremonies of the two religions. I soon perceived that the prosecution of my original plan would render this work too voluminous, and this induced me to alter my purpose. The notes I have given are not, however, in considerable in number I wish I could say as much with respect to their merit and importance. I would only hope, that some of them will be looked upon as not altogether unnecessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The mofl; momentous event that diftinguifhed Hifiory of the church after the fifteenth century, and we may f3ign add, the moft glorious of all the. Revolutions that happened in the ftatc of Chriftianity fince the time of its divine and immortal Founder, was that happy change introduced into religion, which is known by the title of the Bleffed Reformation. This grand revolution, which arofe in Saxony from (mall begin mings, not only fpread itfelf with the utmoft rapidity through all the European provinces, but alfo extended its efficacy more or lefs to the moft diflant parts of the globe, and may be juf'tly confidered as the main and principal fpring which has moved the nations from that illuftrious period, and occafioned the greateft part both of thofe civil and religious revolutions that fill the annals of hiftory down to our times. The face of Europe was, in a more efpecial manner, changed by this great event. The prefent age feels yet, in a fenfible manner, and ages to come will continue to perceive, the ineftimable advantages it produced, and the inconveniences of which it has been the innocent oeeafion. The billory therefore of fuch an important revolution, from whence fo many others have derived their origin, and whofe relations and connections are fo extenfi've and univerfal, demands undoubtedly a peculiar degree of attention, and has an unqueftionable right to the principal place in fuch a work as this. We therefore now proceed to give a compendious View of the modern hiftory of the Chriftian church according to the plan and method already laid down.
