Though the Supreme Court failed to deliver justice, in terms of compensation and punitive damages payable to a voluntary consumer organisation and to the Consumer Welfare Fund, as prescribed in the Consumer Protection Act, his determined zeal to pursue the matter till the filing of the Curative Petition and thereafter, should be an inspiration for all those young people, who have the nerves and the commitment to pursue social goals. Consumer protection has become the topic of debate at all levels. The reason behind this has been the lack of awareness of consumers and the malpractices of the business world. Consumer protection, however, is only possible if two steps are taken. It covers the evaluation of consumer protection machinery and assesses the level of awareness of consumers in Himachal Pradesh. A brief outline of the thesis is as below. Chapter - I deals with the introduction to consumer protection. It discusses the meaning of consumer, consumer protection, and consumerisms. It also discusses the consumer's rights, needs, and consumer's responsibilities. Chapter - II reviews the literature concerning the problem at hand. It also presents a picture of research design formulated for the present research work. It discusses the selection of the problem, importance, scope, objectives, hypotheses and research methodology of the present study. Finally, the limitations and the future scope of study have been shown. Chapter - III discusses consumerism and consumer protection movements at the international and national level. Chapter - IV is an attempt to examine various legislations for consumer protection at the international level as well at the national level in India. Chapter - V reviews the frameworks for consumer dispute resolution and redress in India. Chapter - VI examines the organizational setup for the consumer protection along with its evaluation in Himachal Pradesh. Chapter - VII deals with the analyses of opinion and perception about consumer awareness and consumer alertness with regard to consumer protection. Kautilya's monumental treatise on state- craft 'Arthashastra' dealt with the subject of consumer awareness and protection of his interests. But the fact of the matter is that the consumers are still victims of unfair and restrictive trade practices adopted by trader or manufacturer. With an enormous population along with high levels of poverty, unemployment and poor literacy levels, consumer awareness level towards their rights continues to remain low. Under the section 6 of Consumer Protection Act, there has been an effort to empower consumers by giving them six basic rights. The study aimed to analyze the consumers' awareness and utilization of consumer rights given under Consumer Protection Act. Further, it checked the consumers' knowledge about documents required at consumer forums to file consumer cases. The nature of data used in the present study is primary which had been collected by using a structured questionnaire. 600 respondents of rural and urban areas of fifteen districts of Haryana were sampled. Responses were analyzed by the help of Percentage, Chi- square, Karl Pearson Co-efficient of Correlation and presented by tables and figures. It was concluded that the level of awareness of consumer rights was high among the respondents. Respondents with high education level and high level of income were more aware as compared to those having poor education level and low income level. It was surprising to note that even the level of awareness of consumer rights was high but the utilization of these rights was not observed at very good level. It was inferred that respondents did not know the procedure to move to consumer forums if they had any grievances as nearly 3/4th respondents did not know the documents required for filing the complaints in the consumer forums.

Moreover, awareness of unrecognized consumer rights was also equally accepted by consumers. It indicated that consumers did not exactly know the legal rights but everything which felt like consumer right deemed to be the right of consumer. Television has been reported as major source of awareness of consumer rights along with schools/ colleges, internet and newspaper. Radio was most unpopular source of awareness along with friends and family. Educated, young and high income consumers found internet as very useful source.

The aim of this research is to explore the level of awareness consumers have regarding fast fashion. Additionally, it intends to explore what the term “Fast fashion” means to young Irish consumers. Furthermore, this research aims to provide information on consumer perceptions of fashion retailers. Moreover, the research also intends to highlight whether those perceptions play a role in the buyer decision process. The key findings suggest that consumers fail to associate the ethical and environmental concerns that are synonymous with the fast fashion industry. Moreover, the research also exposed a failure that there is a disconnect between the term fast fashion and the manufacturing methods. Fast fashion and sweatshop labour are not mutually exclusive terms yet fast fashion as a term does not seem to carry the burden of its manufacturing origin. It was found that consumers have intentions of shopping more ethically and sustainably. However, there appears to be several misconceptions in what is currently considered ethical fashion among consumers which would affect the consumers ability to make an informed purchase decision. Cognitive dissonance being the act of consumers distancing themselves from purchase decisions that contradict their morals to avoid the feeling of discomfort was evident in this study. This research also found that the practice of greenwashing was present in fast fashion retailers advertising which does not portray the true environmental and social impacts of a product to the consumer.
