Book Description
Excerpt from Some Account of My Life and Writings, Vol. 1 of 2: An Autobiography In a work of this nature there were, of course, a few passages bearing upon the private career of individuals now living, or only recently deceased, the publication of which could serve no useful end. These have been omitted. In all other respects the work is published as it was written, - for an auto biography cannot possess any value which does not truly and faithfully represent, in his own words, the thoughts, opinions, and feelings, as well as actions, of its author. Book Description
Excerpt from The Autobiography of a Journalist, Vol. 1 of 2 In affixing to the book the portraits of myself, I have yielded my own Opinion, which was Opposed to it, to that of the publishers and my friends, who urged it. TO me it seemed a vanity for one almost unknown to assume that a public would care what manner of man he might be, and that such an as sumption should follow an expressed general desire; but the views of the publishers are imperative, and those Of my friends weightier than my own. Book Description
Excerpt from The Autobiography of John Galt, Vol. 1 of 2 In proceeding with the narrative he is very sen sible of having neglected, apparently, many persons by whom he has been greatly obliged, but they must see, themselves, that he could not mention their names without referring to incidents, which, however a biographer may feel himself warranted to explore, the writer of his own memoirs may be excused for not bringing forward. He cannot say more without, in the opinion of the judicious, violat ing propriety. The man who has given hostages to society, is bound to respect their feelings quite as much as his own. Book Description
Excerpt from Lew Wallace, Vol. 1 of 2: An Autobiography Mine were folk who cared little for ancestry. The grandmother on the paternal side was the exception. A correspondent writes me of hearing her speak often and proudly of her uncle John Paul, he of the famous surname Jones. She was wont to take fire, also, When telling of her Virginia birth, and of being trotted on his knees by George Washington. My American readers will forgive her, I am sure, if she never forgave the British for killing one of her brothers at Brandywine. The remembrance of past days brings with it the revival of early associations and the recollection of early friends, but it recalls also the existence of many hopes which. Book Description
Excerpt from Autobiography of Thomas Guthrie, and Memoir by His Sons, Vol. 1 of 2 Our first care was naturally with the Autobiography. Being unfinished and never revised, it became a question whether it should be published separately and as a frag ment, or incorporated with a completed memoir. The former was deemed the better course. For the sake of convenience, it has been broken up into chapters, and a few short notes appended; but no alterations have been made in the text save such as seemed unavoidable from the circumstances, that Dr. Guthrie was prevented from revising it himself, and that it is given to the world during the lifetime of various persons to whom he alludes in the course of his narrative. Book Description
Excerpt from The Autobiography of a Stage Coachman, Vol. 1 of 2 IF in the perusal of this narrative it should be objected that there is far too much of a personal or private nature, the author's excuse is, that it was commenced to gratify a large circle, beyond whose limits it was never intended to pass but some friends, thinking it worthy of a more extended circulation, have induced him to offer it to the public. If it should be found not altogether to correspond with the title, and here and there to treat of persons and things in a manner not warranted by the position of the author, he claims the privilege of free agency, and shelters himself under the Shadow of precedent. Autobiography of Madame Guyon, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265257524

Pages : 370

Book Description
Excerpt from Autobiography of Madame Guyon, Vol. 1 of 2 Often as one sees her name in religious and quasi-religious publications, it has appeared to me, that those, who so freely use it, for the most part have no acquaintance with the Life of Madame Guyon written by herself. For many years the English-speaking family has been content to depend, for any knowledge of her, on Upham's defective and misleading Life, where her catholic spirit appears bound in the grave clothes of so-called Evangelical dogma. That this should be the case argues ill for the depth of religious life in those communities. Piety, doubtless, there has been, but of a shallow, superficial character, hardly veiling a robust selfhood, which keeps its votaries in perpetual movement and fuss, and sends them running over the world to pluck the motes out of brothers' eyes, forgetful of this great beam in their own. When doctors and teachers with some knowledge of her writings do seriously mention her name, it is without exception apologetically and in a tone of patronizing superiority, which shows how much they have to learn both about themselves and her.
