Aircraft Combat Radius Calculation Procedure for Various Mission Profiles and External-store Configurations
Author: C. M. Weber
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Air warfare
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
An extension and revision of the HARD-1 (Handy Approximate Radius Determination) combat radius calculation procedure described in RM-5280 for aircraft carrying external stores. HARD-3 calculates the radius capability for a particular aircraft having known climb and cruise performance, fuel consumption, drag, etc. The method is somewhat more complex than HARD-1 but it provides greater flexibility and improved accuracy: a wider choice in cruise conditions is now available, and the effect on radius of non-distance-gaining fuel allowances is computed more accurately. The computer program allows for variation in the disposition of empty fuel tanks and for target-bound refueling. Although designed specifically for a ground-attack mission, the procedure may be adapted for other missions. The results compare favorably with estimates made by following the mission-planning procedures described in military flight manuals. The JOSS program is included, along with a sample set of calculations and an explanation of the equations used. (Author).

Estimation of Flight Performance with Closed-form Approximations to the Equations of Motion
Author: Charlie M. Jackson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aeronautics
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
An approximate method for calculating climb and acceleration performance of an air-breathing aircraft has been developed. Basically, the method involves linearization of the equations of motion to obtain closed-form expressions for the desired performance parameters. These expressions are applied over finite velocity intervals where the aerodynamic, propulsion, and flight-path parameters are assumed to be constant. The method is extended by a rapidly convergent iteration procedure to estimate the climb performance for a flight path limited by sonic-boom considerations. Typical examples are presented where the performance is estimated for an air-breathing boost mission to hypersonic speeds and for a complete supersonic-transport mission. The examples illustrate the simplicity of the method and show that the estimated performance is in good agreement with the results of a numerical integration of the equations of motion. The application of the approximate method to these examples indicates the utility of the method for producing performance estimates suitable for preliminary airframe design, sizing studies, propulsion-system evaluation, and cursory heat-transfer and inlet-flow-field determinations along a flight path. In order to increase the utility of the method further, nomograms are presented which provide rapid solutions to the approximate performance equations.
