Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 174

Book Description
Throughout the ages and stages of American history, grandmothers have been the guardians of the generations, the dispensers of wisdom, the instillers of pride and dignity, the conveyors of important religious values, the financial and emotional supporters of the family during times of need, and the promoters of cultural standards and traditions. From Maya Angelou to Martin Luther King Jr. to Oprah Winfrey, the success of many African Americans can be traced back to the love and support of a grandmother. Author Reginald E. Hicks is no exception. For Hicks, An Angels View began as a labor of love to chronicle the life of his own beloved grandmother, from her birth on the family farm in rural New Kent County, Virginia in 1923; through her personal, social, and political trials and tribulations; to her quickly approaching eighty-ninth birthday. However, his humble commemoration eventually blossomed into an emotional story of love, betrayal, triumph, and tragedy embedded in a riveting and dynamic Southern history. Through this exceptional work, Hicks makes a unique and valuable contribution to his family and to the world of black literature.

Case Files of an Angel

Case Files of an Angel PDF Author: Dennis Garvin
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1490800417
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Here is a book that was neither written by a human nor dictated by the Holy Spirit to a human. It is the perspective of an angel, a disinterested third party who is neither human nor divine. Augie is a working angel who, like most angels, troubleshoots and serves God as a messenger, guardian, avenger, chaperoneyou name it, Augie has done it. For reasons unknown, Augies superiors select him to write a book, giving him no reason and no guidelines. Augie figures it must be to help humans understand the spirit world a little better. It was strange that Augie was selected because he takes a rather dim view of the human species. He feels that the sacrifice of Jesus to purchase mankind was like a human who spent a fortune to buy the Brooklyn Bridge. Being a good angel, however, he takes to his task willingly and digs into his case filesreports that all angels must submit following encounters with humans. He includes an after-action summary as a sort of debrief in which he records the important details that he feels humans are too ignorant to see on their own. The result is this book. Since heaven submitted it for publication, I guess they think Augie did an okay job.

No Ordinary Angel

No Ordinary Angel PDF Author: Susan R. Garrett
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300140959
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
In this provocative, intelligent, and highly original addition to the Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library, Susan R. Garrett argues that angel talk has never been merely about angels. Rather, from ancient times until the present, talk about angels has served as a vehicle for reflection on other fundamental life questions, including the nature of God's presence and intervention in the world, the existence and meaning of evil, and the fate of humans after death. In No Ordinary Angel, Garrett examines how biblical and other ancient authors addressed such questions through their portrayals of angels. She compares the ancient angel talk to popular depictions of angels today and considers how the ancient and modern portraits of angels relate to Christian claims about Jesus. No Ordinary Angel offers important insights into the development of angelology, the origins of Christology, and popular Western spirituality ranging from fundamentalist to New Age. In doing so, it provokes stimulating theological reflection on key existential questions.
