Book Description
During the past 30 years, spruce forests of Alaskas Kenai Peninsula have undergone dramatic changes resulting from widespread spruce bark beetle(Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby)) infestation. In 1987 and again in 2000, the Pacific Northwest Research Stations Forest Inventory and Analysis Program conducted initial and remeasurement inventories to assess broad-scale impacts of this infestation. Changes in regeneration of Sitka spruce(Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) are examined by using data collected on 130 plots. Regeneration of Sitka and white spruce in terms of mean number of seedlings per plot is not significantly different from the 1987 findings. The number of plots where seedling stocking remained at previous levels or increased, slightly exceeded the number of locations where seedling stocking declined. Almost half the plots (49 percent) had decreased numbers of seedlings, and almost 72 percent of the plots fell in the less-than-fully-stocked category in both inventories. Also, the distribution of the seedlings over the plot was not uniform. No plots had seedlings on all plot cluster sample points in either inventory.

Book Description
The forests of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, underwent a major spruce beetle(Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby)) outbreak in the 1990s. A repeated inventory of forest resources was designed to assess the effects of the resulting widespread mortality of spruce trees, the dominant component of the Kenai forests. Downed woody materials, fuel heights, and moss depths were recorded during each inventory. Changes in downed and dead woody materials are summarized by forest type and harvest activity, compiled by fuel timelag classes. Fuel heights, fine fuels, and sound large fuels increased between 1987 and 2000. Moss depths and rotten large fuels decreased. Harvested white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) showed the greatest increase of fine fuel classes.

Book Description
Excerpt from An Analytical Method to Assess Spruce Beetle Impacts on White Spruce Resources Uninfested - No live or dead tree on the plot showed any indication of beetle attack or injury. Potential infestation - Plots on which only live trees showed signs of beetle attack, plus plots on which live trees were attacked and trees dead more than 5 years showed signs of attack. This latter group of plots represents areas where there was potential reinfestation of an area attacked more than 5 years before the date of inventory. Ongoing infestation - Plots on which live trees and trees dead less than 5 years showed signs of beetle attack. Past infestation - Plots on which only dead trees showed signs of beetle attack.
