A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

An integral method is presented for the adiabatic compressible turbulent boundary layer which extends recent concepts of turbulent equilibrium boundary layers to the study of nonequilibrium flows. Coles' law of the wall and wake is extended to the case of compressible adiabatic flows with pressure gradient by employing Van Driest's generalized velocities. An analytical expression for the compressible turbulent equilibrium dissipation integral is then derived from the integral momentum, mean energy and local skin friction equations. For the general case of nonequilibrium flows with arbitrary pressure gradients, the dissipation integral is 'unhooked' from the equilibrium pressure gradient parameter through the use of a single empirical curve of existing incompressible flow data. Numerical solutions are then presented for a variety of compressible flows. As a first step in developing an integral method for nonadiabatic flows, the family of incompressible equilibrium enthalpy profiles are solved for from the thermal energy equation. (Author).

The report summarizes the results obtained from a three year analytical investigation of transient laminar and steady turbulent boundary layers for incompressible, two-dimensional flow. The analysis of these two classes of boundary-layer flows is based upon a solution of the appropriate partial differential equations by an approximation technique, the method of weighted residuals. Results were obtained for the transient laminar flow over a semi-infinite flat plate for both the boundary-layer equations and a modification to these equations which includes an axial diffusion term. For turbulent flows, several different boundary-layer prediction methods were developed by utilizing different turbulent shear stress models. In addition, a unified comparison of some thirty local and global shear stress models was made by comparing the predicted shear stress profiles with twelve carefully selected experimental studies taken from the literature. On the basis of this comparison, eleven different shear models were incorporated into computation schemes using the method of weighted residuals and the resulting calculations were compared in terms of computed values of the boundary-layer parameters.
