This report describes the development of a method for numerically computing the inviscid transonic flow field over an airfoil with a leading-edge slat or a trailing-edge flap. The approach is to solve the full inviscid irrotational flow equations about two-element airfoil systems. The methodology consists of the development of a suitable computational plane and grid system through the application of a series of conformal mappings. The appropriate set of equations and boundary conditions are derived in terms of a smoothly varying, single-valued reduced potential function through analytic removal of all singularities in the computational domain. A stable and accurate relaxation procedure is established for the numerical solution of the governing equations. The method is applied to a variety of transonic supercritical two-element airfoil configurations. Results are presented depicting the surface pressure distribution, streamline patterns in the physical and computational domain, and Mach number contours. (Author).

A numerical procedure has been developed to compute the transonic viscous-inviscid interacting flow field about airfoils with leading edge slats or trailing edge flaps. The inviscid theory utilizes conformal mappings in a full potential flow formulation, with analytic removal of singularities and a mixed flow relaxation procedure. The turbulent boundary layer is computed with methods based on a turbulent kinetic energy formulation and is coupled to the inviscid flow using surface source flow boundary conditions. Semiempirical methods are used to compute local strong interaction regions occurring in the vicinity of shock waves, trailing edges, and to account for flow separation. Our results are in good agreement with existing wind tunnel data for several typical two-element airfoil configurations. (Author).

A finite difference procedure based upon a system of unsteady equations in proper conservation form with either exact or small disturbance steady terms is used to calculate the steady flows over several classes of airfoils. The airfoil condition is fulfilled on a slab whose upstream extremity is a semi-circle overlaying the airfoil leading edge circle. The limitations of the small disturbance equations are demonstrated in an extreme example of a blunt-nosed, aft-cambered airfoil. The necessity of using the equations in proper conservation form to capture the shock properly is stressed. Ability of the steady relaxation procedures to capture the shock is briefly examined.

The problem of constructing solutions for transonic flow over symmetric airfoils is treated for simplification of the mapping of the incompressible flow is emphasized. In the case of a symmetric Joukowski airfoil without circulation the mapping is relatively simple, but the coefficients in the power series are difficult to evaluate. As a means of simplification an approximate flow is used which differs only slightly from the exact incompressible one when the thickness is small. The airfoil oscillates about a mid-chord axis with attitude alpha = 1 deg + or - 1 deg at reduced frequency k = omega C/U(infinty) = 0.2.
