Similitude for Normal Shock Waves in Nonequilibrium Flows

Similitude for Normal Shock Waves in Nonequilibrium Flows PDF Author: Ralph E. Thomas
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Shock waves
Languages : en
Pages : 60

Book Description
Similarity parameters are developed which govern the length of nonequilibrium zones behind normal shock waves. Non-equilibrium effects produced by both vibrational relaxation and dissociation are considered. The parameters can also account for arbitrary levels of free-stream vibrational energy or dissociation level. The validity of the parameters is examined using numerical computations of the properties of the non-equilibrium fields. These computations are made with the aid of experimentally based rate expressions. The parameters, when written in a form describing the variation of non-equilibrium zone length with Mach number, are shown to have acceptable accuracy. (Author).

A Thin-shock-layer Solution for Nonequilibrium, Inviscid Hypersonic Flows in Earth, Martian, and Venusian Atmospheres

A Thin-shock-layer Solution for Nonequilibrium, Inviscid Hypersonic Flows in Earth, Martian, and Venusian Atmospheres PDF Author: William L. Gose
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Inviscid flow
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
An approximate inverse solution is presented for the nonequilibrium flow in the inviscid shock layer about a vehicle in hypersonic flight. The method is based upon a thin-shock-layer approximation and has the advantage of being applicable to both subsonic and supersonic regions of the shock layer. The relative simplicity of the method makes it ideally suited for programming on a digital computer with a significant reduction in storage capacity and computing time required by other more exact methods. Comparison of nonequilibrium solutions for an air mixture obtained by the present method is made with solutions obtained by two other methods. Additional cases are presented for entry of spherical nose cones into representative Venusian and Martian atmospheres. A digital computer program written in FORTRAN language is presented that permits an arbitrary gas mixture to be employed in the solution. The effects of vibration, dissociation, recombination, electronic excitation, and ionization are included in the program.

Theoretical Studies of Supersonic Two-dimensional and Axisymmetric Nonequilibrium Flow, Including Calculations of Flow Through a Nozzle

Theoretical Studies of Supersonic Two-dimensional and Axisymmetric Nonequilibrium Flow, Including Calculations of Flow Through a Nozzle PDF Author: James Joe Der
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics, Supersonic
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
Chemical and vibrational nonequilibrium phenomena in steady inviscid flow fields are studied by the analysis of flow past curved boundaries. Possible alternative choices of the state variables to be used are considered. General features of the nonequilibrium flow are studied by examination of the mathematical properties of the nonlinear flow equations. An axisymmetric nonequilibrium flow of air through a supersonic nozzle is analyzed by means of numerical computations. The coupling effects between nonuniformity (across a nozzle section) and nonequilibrium, not taken into account in the quasi-one-dimensional flow approximation, are revealed by the present analysis.

An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Ionized Flow Field about a Hemisphere Cylinder and Its Effect on the Radiation Pattern of a Slot Antenna

An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Ionized Flow Field about a Hemisphere Cylinder and Its Effect on the Radiation Pattern of a Slot Antenna PDF Author: James T. Curtis
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
A combined analytical and experimental investigation of the effect of stagnation region chemicalionization non-equilibrium phenomena on the aerothermodynamic and electrical properties of the flow field over a hemisphere cylinder at hypersonic speeds was conducted. In the analytical studies, flow field caluclations were made using several IBM 704 computer programs which account for finite reaction rate processes. The experimental phases of the study were done in the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory 6' Shock Tunnel at a nominally constant velocity of 15,500 ft/sec. Measurements were made of the surface pressure and heat transfer, shock layer pitot pressure, and suface layer electrical conductivity on hemishpere cylinder models for a range of values of the stagnation region non-equilibrium scaling parameter. Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 (In 2 Volumes)

Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 (In 2 Volumes) PDF Author: Mohamed M Hafez
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814495778
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1169

Book Description
The first volume of CFD Review was published in 1995. The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.
