AN EVALUATION OF THE EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES PROGRAM AT UNION CATHOLIC REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL./ by James T. Reagan, Jr
Author: James T. Reagan (Jr.)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Action research in education
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
This action research study evaluated the extracurricular activities program at Union Catholic Regional High School. The focus was to explore the perceived benefits and significance of the current extracurricular activities program and to transform, refine, and enhance the extracurricular offerings. Extracurricular activities have been present in American schools since the 18th century (Lee, 1983). Previous research shows strong correlations between participation in extracurricular activities and academic performance (Eccles, Barber, Stone, & Hunt, 2003; Marsh, 1992; Eccles & Barber, 1999). At a time when many Catholic schools are closing, and other educational opportunities exist, interest is increasing in developing strong extracurricular activities to provide a "value-added" to Catholic secondary education. Since this is significant in nature, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the extracurricular activities program at Union Catholic Regional High School, determining its viability, impact, and importance. This mixed-method research study used a triangulation approach and collected qualitative and quantitative data concurrently. Data sources included a review of archival data, student surveys, and faculty surveys. The second phase of the research included qualitative interviews with school guidance counselors and college admissions counselors; as well focus groups with faculty and parents. The interview and focus group questions were generated from the results of the previously collected data. Analysis of the data provided key areas of evaluation of the extracurricular activities program at Union Catholic Regional High School. The evaluation focused on the evidence that students participate in extracurricular activities for socialization purposes; students who participate in extracurricular activities are engaging in a myriad of 21st century learning skills; and that transportation issues limit the amount of time and access students have in participating in the extracurricular activities program. Further action research on students' needs for socialization and the effectiveness of 21st century learning skills is encouraged.
