An Afternoon in Astoria PDF Author: Rudolph Burckhardt

ISBN: 9780870706912
Category : Architectural photography

Book Description
In February 1940, Rudy Burckhardt spent an afternoon in Astoria, Queens, photographing the streets of the neighborhood, its gas stations, cars, children at play and other everyday scenes. Burckhardt later mounted a group of the photographs in a spiral-bound album, and wrote on the cover, in neatly printed letters, "An Afternoon in Astoria." This handmade book, unpublished until now, composes a tour of this part of New York, its empty lots and abandoned cars made poetic by Burckhardt's eye. The Museum of Modern Art recently published An Afternoon in Astoria and has also produced a limited-edition, boxed, spiral-bound facsimile of the original handmade album. An immaculately produced clothbound box with tipped-in reproductions from the book inside-and-out contains the album facsimile and a separately bound essay by Sarah Hermanson Meister, Associate Curator in the photography department of the Museum, discussing Burckhardt and specifically the groups of photographs he bound into albums for the pleasure of himself and his friends.

Astoria

Astoria PDF Author: Malena Morling
Publisher: University of Pittsburgh Press
ISBN: 0822990636
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
Astoria examines the transitory physical world of the body and reflects on the seamless quality of the present moment. Surrounded by the rush and noise of trains, highways, and grocery store checkout lines, the narrator of these poems creates an intimate space in which to ponder the ephemeral nature of everyday things and the deeper meanings that might underlie them all. "It is amazing / we're not more amazed," one poem muses, "The world / is here / and then it is gone." The poems in Astoria unravel the hidden within the obvious, and speak to our innate questions of longing, purpose, and existence.

Book Description
One afternoon in February of 1940, Rudolph Burckhardt took the train from Manhattan to the borough of Queens. While there he took pictures of gas stations, cars and children playing. Revealing the photographer's delight in the uncelebrated and the everyday, these four subjects appear repeatedly, from different distances and varying points of view. Later dry-mounted into a hand-made, spiral-bound album titled An Afternoon in Astoriain neatly printed letters, Burckhardt's photographic sequences take the viewer on a semi-narrative walk through a quiet, spread-out neighborhood, far away from everything. More than 60 years after its creation, An Afternoon in Astoriais now finally made available to an audience larger than the photographer, his family, and his friends. Printed to capture the unassuming nature of the original album, with its careful, filmic sequencing of photographs mounted on neutral gray board, this volume celebrates a long-ago afternoon spent in the borough of Queens, the temporary new home of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The Whole Art of Detection

The Whole Art of Detection PDF Author: Lyndsay Faye
Publisher: Grove/Atlantic, Inc.
ISBN: 0802189369
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This collection of short mysteries by the international-bestselling author of Dust and Shadow “belongs on the top shelf with the very best of Doyle’s” (Nicholas Meyer, author of The Seven-Per-Cent Solution). Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, Edgar Award–finalist Lyndsay Faye has masterfully woven these quintessential characters into her own works of fiction—from her acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow, to a series of short stories for the Strand Magazine, whose predecessor published the first Sherlock Holmes story in 1892. The best of Faye’s Sherlockian tales, including two new works, are brought together in a collection that spans the character’s career, from self-taught upstart to lauded detective, both before and after he faked his own death over a Swiss waterfall in 1894. In “The Lowther Park Mystery,” the unsociable Holmes is forced to attend a garden party at the request of his politician brother and improvises a bit of theater to foil a conspiracy against the government. “The Adventure of the Thames Tunnel” brings Holmes’s attention to the murder of a jewel thief in the middle of an underground railway passage. With Holmes and Watson encountering all manner of ungrateful relatives, phony psychologists, wronged wives, outright villains, and even a peculiar species of deadly red leech, The Whole Art of Detection is a must-read for any fan of historical crime fiction. “If Lyndsay Faye’s byline weren’t on the cover, readers might deduce that the Sherlock Holmes mysteries in The Whole Art of Detection actually came from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.” —David Martindale, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
