Jewish Feeling

Jewish Feeling PDF Author: Richa Dwor
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472589807
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
Jewish Feeling brings together affect theory and Jewish Studies to trace Jewish difference in literary works by nineteenth-century Anglo-Jewish authors. Dwor argues that midrash, a classical rabbinic interpretive form, is a site of Jewish feeling and that literary works underpinned by midrashic concepts engage affect in a distinctly Jewish way. The book thus emphasises the theological function of literature and also the new opportunities afforded by nineteenth-century literary forms for Jewish women's theological expression. For authors such as Grace Aguilar (1816-1847) and Amy Levy (1861-1889), feeling is a complex and overlapping category that facilitates the transmission of Jewish ways of thinking into English literary forms. Dwor reads them alongside George Eliot, herself deeply engaged with issues of contemporary Jewish identity. This sheds new light on Eliot by positioning her works in a nexus of Jewish forms and concerns. Ultimately, and despite considerable differences in style and outlook, Aguilar and Levy are shown to deploy Jewish feeling in their ethics of futurity, resistance to conversion and closure, and in their foregrounding of a model of reading with feeling.

The Rise of Modern Jewish Politics

The Rise of Modern Jewish Politics PDF Author: C. S. Monaco
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0415659833
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Contends that the starting point from which the "new" Jewish politics emerged was the organized joint Jewish-Christian protest against anti-Jewish legislation in Russia which was held in London in 1827. From this event on, the British Jewish community perceived itself as the champion of the rights of Jews everywhere. Traces the development of these politics from 1827-1903, dwelling on the main campaigns and Jewish diplomatic efforts during this period, including the Damascus Affair of 1840, the Mortara Affair in 1858, the diplomatic struggle for the civil rights of Romanian Jews and against the pogroms there in the 1860s-70s, and reactions to the pogroms in Russia in 1881-82 and the Kishinev pogrom of 1903. Gradually, from the mid-19th century on, American Jewry joined in the British Jewish protest campaigns and diplomatic efforts. Relates the activities of some Jewish leaders, e.g. Moses E. Levy from Florida and Moses Montefiore. Not all of the Jewish interventions were successful; however, the significance of the new Jewish politics can be measured not only by the formal successes of its campaigns. From the start, this new politics attracted masses of Jews in Britain and the USA, and developed into broad social movements. The tradition of popular movements for the defense of Jews worldwide continued during the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s, and during the campaign for the rights of Jews in the USSR in the 1970s.

Thy Kingdom Come 爾國臨格

Thy Kingdom Come 爾國臨格 PDF Author: Philip L. Wickeri 魏克利
Publisher: Hong Kong University Press
ISBN: 9888528025
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican Church) Province in 2018, Thy Kingdom Come: A Photographic History of Anglicanism in Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China is a richly illustrated history of the past 200 years. Although connected to the British colonial government, Hong Kong bishops always sought to relate the Church to Chinese society, making this story predominantly Chinese. The book is divided into five parts. Part I explores the beginnings of Anglican and Episcopal missions in China. Part II relates the history of the Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui (CHSKH) from 1912 to 1951, a turbulent time in China, when the church’s challenge was to respond to change in every facet of society. Part III illustrates the history of the Diocese from 1951 to 1981, during which new churches, schools, and clinics were established. Part IV records Hong Kong’s transition from colonial rule to the return to China; it was during these years that Bishop Peter Kong-kit Kwong developed parish ministries, strengthened missions in education and social welfare, and solidified relations with the church in China. Part V describes new developments in the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. With almost 180 photos, Thy Kingdom Come brings Church history to life in a way no prose history ever could. “This beautiful book is a moving witness to the work of God in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China. It pays tribute to all those who faithfully proclaimed and responded to the word of God, and to the vibrancy of the life of the Church in that province. I thoroughly recommend it, both home and abroad, for those looking at their own history and those learning of the church universal.” ──坎特伯里大主教賈斯汀•韋爾比 “This book is an invaluable resource to understand the history of the Chinese Anglican Church. Each picture tells a different story of the people or mission work of the Church. Together they form a colorful mosaic of Christians whose work has furthered God’s Kingdom.”
