Book Description
Excerpt from Addresses and Papers Bearing Chiefly on Education In assuming the duties to which you have called me, I do so with diffidence coupled with hopefulness. I am abashed when I think that I am to be the successor of the Smiths, and of Alexander, Hoge, Cushing, Carroll, Maxwell, Sparrow, Green and Atkinson; but I am comforted by the thought that their virtues arc imitable, and that their strength was in God. I am cheered, too, by the consideration that I am the unanimous choice of your honorable body for this high position; that your selection was not based on friendly solicitation or on evidence furnished by others, but upon your own intimate knowledge of my character, attainments and mode of life, and that I have the assurance of your cordial cooperation in any efforts I may make to enlarge and extend the usefulness of the College whose interests are entrusted to your care. Permit me to say that there is no body of gentlemen with whom I would prefer to be associated. It has been my fortune to be acquainted with many of the good and great, but I have met none whose sentiments and aims seem to me to he more exalted or which more entirely secure my sympathy and approval; and I confidently anticipate both profit and pleasure from the relations we are to sustain to one another in the future. Elementary Education (Classic Reprint)

Elementary Education (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William Torrey Harris

Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Education Pacific divisions enroll only 18 per cent, having a much smaller ratio of children of school age. In a reading population one section understands the motives of the other, and this prevents political differences from becoming too wide for solution by partisan politics. When one section cannot any longer accredit the other with honest and patriotic motives, war is only a question of time. That this general prevalence of elementary education is accompanied by a comparative neglect of the secondary and higher courses of study is evident from the fact that out of the number of pupils enrolled more than ninety-five in every hundred are pursuing elementary studies; less than four in a hundred are in secondary studies in high schools, acade mies and other institutions; only one in a hundred (13 in one thousand) is in a college or a school for higher studies. In considering the reasons for the increase of the length of the term of the elementary school and its adoption of a graded course of study, one comes upon the most important item of improvement that belongs to the recent history of education, namely, the introduction of professionally trained teachers. The first normal school established in the United States recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. It was founded at Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1839. The num ber of public normal schools supported by the state or municipal governments has increased since that year to 167, enrolling students, and graduating nearly per annum. To this number are to be added 1 78 private normal schools, with an aggregate of students and graduates. In 1880 there were 240 normal school students in each million of inhabitants; in 1897 there were 936, or nearly four times as many in each million. Book Description
Excerpt from Primary Education As I said before, a child's life is largely made up of action, and his birthright is free motor-activity. It is believed that games furnish a better field for the development of child-nature than any other exercise ever employed in a school course. By means of them the power to think quickly, to judge, to act, as well as to learn politeness and self-restraint, can be unconsciously acquired. That which spontaneously holds the child's attention will be the line of least resistance; therefore his play interests should be correlated with the school work.
