Betty Alden the First-Born Daughter of the Pilgrims (Classic Reprint)

Betty Alden the First-Born Daughter of the Pilgrims (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Jane G. Austin

Pages : 402

Book Description
Excerpt from Betty Alden the First-Born Daughter of the Pilgrims Everybody has sympathized with Mr. Dick who could not keep King Charles's head out of his memorial, and I hope everybody will sympathize with me who have been unable to keep Betty Alden in this her memorial so constantly as I wished and she deserved. But as the whole includes the less, her story will be found threaded through that of her people and her times in that modest subordination to which the lives of her sex were trained in that day. He who would read for himself the story of this noble woman, the first - born daughter of the Pilgrims, must seek it through ancient volumes and mouldering records, until at Little Compton in Rhode Island he finds upon her gravestone the last affectionate and honorable mention of Elizabeth, daughter of John and Priscilla Alden, and wife of William Pabodie. Or in lighter mood, he may consider the rugged rhyme tradition places in her mouth upon the occasion of the birth of her great great grandchild: - "Rise daughter! To thy daughter run! Thy daughter's daughter hath a son." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Acting Version of Henry W. Savage's Production of Every-Woman

Acting Version of Henry W. Savage's Production of Every-Woman PDF Author: Walter Browne
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330697931
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
Excerpt from Acting Version of Henry W. Savage's Production of Every-Woman: Her Pilgrimage in Quest of Love; A Modern Morality Play While Everywoman is absolutely a modern regards characterization, action and environments, it is fashioned after the model of the ancient morality plays, those products of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries of which Everyman is the best known example. While every character in Everywoman is symbolical of various abstract virtues, vices and conditions, I have endeavored to make them also concrete types of actual men and women of the present day. It was my object to present an allegory, in the shape of a stage play, sufficiently dramatic and soul-stirring in its story and action to form an attractive entertainment, quite apart from its psychological significance. A Pilgrim Maid

A Pilgrim Maid PDF Author: Marion Ames Taggart
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331500097

Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
Excerpt from A Pilgrim Maid: A Story of Plymouth Colony in 1620 This story is like those we hear of our neighbours to-day: it is a mixture of fact and fancy. The aim in telling it has been to present Plymouth Colony as it was in its first three years of existence; to keep to possibilities, even while inventing inci dents. Actual events have been transferred from a later to an earlier year when they could be made useful, to bring them within the story's compass, and to develop it. For instance, John Billington was lost for five days and died early, but not as early as in the story. Stephen Hopkins was fined for allowing his servants to play shovelboard, but this did not happen till some time later than 1622. Stephen Hopkins was twice married; records show that there was dissen sion; that the second Wife tried to get an inheritance for her own children, to the injury of the son and daughter of the first Wife. Facts of this sort are used, enlarged upon, construed to cause, or altered to suit, certain results. But there is fidelity to the general trend of events, above all to the spirit of Plymouth in its beginnings.
