Book Description
Amines and Schizophrenia is a collection of articles that survey and discuss the biochemical basis present, if any, in schizophrenia, focusing on the role of certain amines. The book discusses certain hypotheses dealing with the field of bio-chemistry as the basis for diseases such as schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, and related diseases. Discussions start with the properties of mescaline, because the psychotic effect of the drug has some aspects similar to that of a schizophrenic syndrome. One paper examines the presence of certain amines, such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain, including their role in the synaptic transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system. Other papers review the role of derangements of tryptophan metabolism in psychotic behavior; the metabolic interrelationships of tryptophan and methionine in mental illness; and the results obtained with psychomimetic and non-psychomimetic congeners of three classes of indoleamines including LSD. The book gives more details on the actions of various biological amines on single neurons in the limbic system of the brain. The text also evaluates the use of hallucinogenic drugs in considering their heuristic value in the study of the biochemical basis of mental function. The selection will prove relevant for psychologists, psychiatrists, drug researchers, pharmacologists, and chemical laboratory workers and technicians.

Catecholamines and Schizophrenia

Catecholamines and Schizophrenia PDF Author: Steven W. Matthysse
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483159574
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 407

Book Description
Catecholamines and Schizophrenia reviews research linking catecholamines to schizophrenia. Topics include the relationship between stereotyped behavior and amphetamine psychosis, between antipsychotic drugs and catecholamine synapses, and between biogenic amines and behavior. The chemical neuropathology of schizophrenia, enzymology and regulation of catecholamine enzymes, and advances in histochemical technologies used in neurochemical pathology are also covered. This book consists of 47 chapters organized into six sections. After giving an overview of the pharmacology and physiology of stereotyped behavior, this book discusses the behavioral and biochemical aspects of amphetamine psychosis; stereoselective features of catecholamine disposition and their behavioral implications; and the effects of amphetamines on catecholamine metabolism. A two-factor theory of schizophrenia is also presented. The chapters that follow focus on the role of monoamine oxidase in schizophrenia and other behavioral disorders; the chemical pathology of schizophrenia; genetic control of biogenic amines; and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase. This book will be of value to students, researchers, and practitioners in fields ranging from neuropharmacology and physiology to biology, biochemistry, psychiatry, and psychology.

Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders

Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders PDF Author: S. Charles Schulz
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019937807X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 401

Book Description
Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders aims to engage young caregivers in psychiatry, psychology, nursing and social work so that they will be able to become well informed about this significant--and at times confusing--illness. Because schizophrenia is considered to be one of the most complicated and severe psychiatric disorders, this book has the goal of summarizing key issues of the illness, such as its presentation, frequency and age of onset, and diagnostic characteristics. It also contains informative chapters about the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, ranging from brain development issues, genetics, and likely abnormalities in neurotransmitters. This book will give young professionals and those joining the field an excellent and accessible background to treatment. In this area, Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders provides a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment initiation, strategies for non-response, approaches of therapy, and importantly, ways to provide family therapy and support.

Handbook of the Behavioral Neurobiology of Serotonin

Handbook of the Behavioral Neurobiology of Serotonin PDF Author: Christian P. Muller
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080878172
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 849

Book Description
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, often cited as 5-HT) is one of the major excitatory neurotransmitter, and the serotonergic system is one of the best studied and understood transmitter systems. It is crucially involved in the organization of virtually all behaviours and in the regulation of emotion and mood. Alterations in the serotonergic system, induced by e.g. learning or pathological processes, underlie behavioural plasticity and changes in mood, which can finally results in abnormal behaviour and psychiatric conditions. Not surprisingly, the serotonergic system and its functional components appear to be targets for a multitude of pharmacological treatments - examples of very successful drugs targeting the serotoninergic system include Prozac and Zoloft. The last decades of research have not only fundamentally expanded our view on serotonin but also revealed in much more detail an astonishing complexity of this system, which comprises a multitude of receptors and signalling pathways. A detailed view on its role in basal, but also complex, behaviours emerged, and, was presented in a number of single review articles. Although much is known now, the serotonergic system is still a fast growing field of research contributing to our present understanding of the brains function during normal and disturbed behaviour. This handbook aims towards a detailed and comprehensive overview over the many facets of behavioural serotonin research. As such, it will provide the most up to date and thorough reading concerning the serotonergic systems control of behaviour and mood in animals and humans. The goal is to create a systematic overview and first hand reference that can be used by students and scholars alike in the fields of genetics, anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, behavioural neuroscience, pathology, and psychiatry. The chapters in this book will be written by leading scientists in this field. Most of them have already written excellent reviews in their field of expertise. The book is divided in 4 sections. After an historical introduction, illustrating the growth of ideas about serotonin function in behaviour of the last forty years, section A will focus on the functional anatomy of the serotonergic system. Section B provides a review of the neurophysiology of the serotonergic system and its single components. In section C the involvement of serotonin in behavioural organization will be discussed in great detail, while section D deals with the role of serotonin in behavioural pathologies and psychiatric disorders. The first handbook broadly discussing the behavioral neurobiology of the serotonorgic transmitter system Co-edited by one of the pioneers and opinion leaders of the past decades, Barry Jacobs (Princeton), with an international list (10 countries) of highly regarded contributors providing over 50 chapters, and including the leaders in the field in number of articles and citations: K. P. Lesch, T. Sharp, A. Caspi, P. Blier, G.K. Aghajanian, E. C. Azmitia, and others The only integrated and complete resource on the market containing the best information integrating international research, providing a global perspective to an international community Of great value not only for researchers and experts, but also for students and clinicians as a background reference

Book Description
In Blaming the Brain Elliott Valenstein exposes the many weaknesses inherent in the scientific arguments supporting the widely accepted theory that biochemical imbalances are the main cause of mental illness. He lays bare the commercial motives of drug companies and their huge stake in expanding their markets. This provocative book will force patients, practitioners, and prescribers alike to rethink the causes of mental illness and the methods by which we treat it.
