Abstract: Historically the United States, with the exception of ritual performances by indigenous Americans, did not have a distinct puppetry tradition, utilizing instead the imported techniques of its immigrant population. In the twentieth century, puppeteers began to explore puppetry's capabilities, producing challenging and innovative theatrical work in a distinctly American style. Puppetry was given a stage as popular broadcasting content on the newly invented television. In this media environment, Jim Henson pioneered new techniques, becoming the most famous puppeteer in history. His success enabled him to serve his field as a spokesman and sponsor. In 1982, he established the Jim Henson Foundation, a non-profit organization to support puppetry artists. The Jim Henson Foundation is the only organization in the United States devoted to funding puppet theater and its mission reflects Jim Henson's commitment to the community of artists who make American puppetry the vivid panorama it has become. Without the Foundation, puppetry in the United States would not be experiencing the explosion of creativity and exposure it currently enjoys.

Paul McPharlin is one of the 20th century's most important contributors to the art of puppetry. Over a period of nine years he created some 20 productions with marionettes, rod puppets, hand puppets and shadow figures. He was also a prolific writer whose technical, theoretical and historical works contributed significantly to a puppetry revival. His book The Puppet Theatre in America is considered the definitive history of American puppetry. Though shy and aloof, McPharlin was also energetic. He had an ability to bring people together and used this knack to found a national puppetry organization, Puppeteers of America. Besides the author's extensive research on McPharlin and puppetry, the book draws on significant contributions from McPharlin's wife, puppeteer and author Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin, who allowed the use of her 18-year correspondence with Paul in the creation of the book. Chapters take the reader through McPharlin's childhood as a loner in Detroit, his maturation and education in New York, and his early, erratic and often unsuccessful attempts at making a living. His puppeteering years, 1929 to 1937, are detailed, as are the later years that saw him first working for the WPA and then being drafted into the army to serve in World War II at age 38. He continued making important contributions to the art of puppetry until a brain tumor took his life at age 45 in 1948. Appendices present two of McPharlin's plays, The Barn at Bethlehem: A Christmas Play and Punch's Circus. Given that slaveholders prohibited the creation of African-style performing objects, is there a traceable connection between traditional African puppets, masks, and performing objects and contemporary African American puppetry? This study approaches the question by looking at the whole performance complex surrounding African performing objects and examines the material culture of object performance. Object Performance in the Black Atlantic argues that since human beings can attribute private, personal meanings to objects obtained for personal use such as dolls, vessels, and quilts, the lines of material culture continuity between African and African American object performance run through objects that performed in ritual rather than theatrical capacity. Split into three parts, this book starts by outlining the spaces where the African American object performance complex persisted through the period of slavery. Part Two traces how African Americans began to reclaim object performance in the era of Jim Crow segregation and Part Three details how increased educational and economic opportunities along with new media technologies enabled African Americans to use performing objects as a powerful mode of resistance to the objectification of Black bodies.
