American Homo

American Homo PDF Author: Jeffrey Escoffier
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1788732332
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
A sweeping account of the way lesbian, gay, and bisexual people have challenged and changed society In this provocative book, Jeffrey Escoffier tracks LGBT movements across the contested terrain of American political life, where they have endured the historical tension between the homoeroticism coursing through American culture and the virulent periodic outbreaks of homophobic populism. Escoffier explores how every new success enables a new disciplinary and normalizing form of domination; only the active exercise of democratic rights and participation in radical coalitions allows LGBT people to sustain the benefits of community and the freedom of sexual perversity.

American Perversity

American Perversity PDF Author: Bradford Borden

ISBN: 9781414032931
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
When young Jean Cameron Kirkland's tenth birthday arrived in 1934, the Great Depression was still in effect. Money was scarce, yet life on the Kirklands' small farm in piedmont North Carolina seemed to Cammie entirely satisfactory. The Kirkland gardens and livestock kept them supplied with plenty of food; Farmington School, the Grange, and Wesley Chapel Church provided continual community activities and entertainment for the entire Pino Community; and the Kirkland and Cameron kin aunts, and uncles, cousins and grandparents were very near and dear. This account of the year in which Cammie reached her "First Decade" describes her family's everyday farm life, the toys that Cammie and her cousin Ben made out of odds and ends, the games they played, and the songs they sang. It includes stories about an almost-sabotaged school operetta, a birthday hot-dog roast, an attempt at marketing "bug shells," the revenge of an insulted pig, a big family reunion, and a Christmas hayride.

Political Perversion

Political Perversion PDF Author: Joshua Gunn
Publisher:
ISBN: 022671344X
Category : Communication
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
"When Trump became president, much of the country was repelled by what they saw as the vulgar spectacle of his ascent, the perversion of the highest office in the land. In his bold, groundbreaking book Political Perversion, rhetorician Joshua Gunn argues that this "mean-spirited turn" in American politics (of which Trump is the paragon) is best understood as a structural perversion enhanced primarily by the speed of communication technologies. Drawing on insights from critical theory, media ecology, and psychoanalysis, Gunn argues that perverse rhetorics dominate not only the political sphere but also our daily interactions with others, in person and online. From sexting to campaign rhetoric, Gunn shows how technology has changed our ways of relating (and not relating) to others and has engendered infantile and sadistic forms of provocation and enjoyment. In this book, Trump is only the tip of a sinister, rapidly growing iceberg, one to which we ourselves unwittingly contribute on a daily basis"--

Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse

Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse PDF Author: P. O'Connor
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1403978700
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse contains analysis of sexual perversion and narrative creativity in fictions from the Latin American boom and post-boom. O'Connor's main argument is that orthodox criticism of Latin American literature has neglected the eccentric singularities of other fictive trends in the corpus (especially in the second half of the twentieth-century). At the same time, by examining these eccentric singularities in their relationship to mainstream trends in the Latin American corpus, O'Connor forces his readers to view these master narratives and major trends (such as modernismo or magical realism) from surprisingly new angles. Five of the authors discussed (Puig, Lezama, Lima, Cortazar and Sarduy) have an established place in the Latin American literary canon. A fifth one, Rosario Ferre, may have come close to achieving that status with her earlier fictions. Others (Felisberto Hernandez, Alicia Borinsky, Cristina Peri Rossi and Silvia Molloy) are less well known, but they are certainly highly significant authors for scholars and students of contemporary Latin American fiction.
