Book Description
Excerpt from American Jewish Historical Quarterly, Vol. 23 The object of this Society is to collect and publish material bearing upon the history of America, and to promote the study of Jewish history in general, preferably so far as the same is related to American Jewish history or connected with the causes of emigration from various parts of the world to this continent. It is known that Jews in Spain and Portugal lent no inconsiderable aid to the voyages that led to the discovery of America, that a few accompanied the earliest discoverers and that Jews were among the first settlers on this continent, and in its adjacent islands. Considerable numbers saw service in the Colonial and Revolutionary wars, some of them with great distinction. Others contributed liberally to the Continental treasury, at critical periods, to aid in the establishment of Independence. Since the foundation of our government, Jews have played an active part in the political affairs of the country, and have been called upon to hold important public positions. The records of the achievements of these men will, when gathered together, prove of value and interest to the historian, and perchance cast light upon some obscure parts of the history of our country. Book Description
Excerpt from American Jewish Historical Quarterly: Organized at New York, June 7, 1982 The Jews have been Specially active as colonizers, not because Of innate restlessness nor because of a commercial Spirit, but because in countries where they have suffered most from restrictions and persecutions they have been among the first to avail of this avenue of escape from tyranny and go to the remotest unsettled portions of the world to enjoy liberties denied to them at home. The Jews and commerce are found continually associated in foreign and colonial trade, not because the Jews were continually in search for new highways Of commerce, but because commerce and the Jews, the former by natural laws and the latter by artificial laws followed the path of least restriction. Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society, 1920, Vol. 27 The present volume, however, presents the real work of the Rev. J. J. Lyons, for it contains the result of his inde fatigable industry in collecting material on American Jewish history. In order to obtain data, Mr. Lyons in the course of many years examined thousands of volumes on American local history, entering his finds in a number of note books, in addition to which he collected original documents wherever available as well as rare pamphlets and newspaper clippings. As stated in the introduction to the first volume, the result of these labors remained hidden from the world for many years, so that a very large portion of his sources was discovered independently by other workers in the same field, and had been published in our Publications before the work of Mr. Lyons was placed within the reach of scholars by the generous gift of his children. Despite this fact, however, there still re mained so much material, part of which is entirely new, while the rest is valuable as amplifying material already published, that the present volume will be found to be a useful source book for workers in this field.
