Book Description
Excerpt from American Diplomacy in the Orient Although there is a vast amount of literature on Asiatic subjects, there exists a recognized need of a work covering the topics embraced in the present volume. The great development of the industrial resources of the country, the necessity of larger markets in Asia, and the recently acquired territorial possessions in the Pacific Ocean, have given new interest and importance to the international relations of the United States with the Far East. Under these conditions, it seemed desirable to have in consecutive order a brief history of the diplomatic intercourse of this government with the Orient, in order to form a correct estimate of the policy which has controlled the American people in their contact with the countries in that quarter of the globe. The author has the more cheerfully undertaken the task from a conviction that a narrative of that intercourse would reflect great credit upon his country, and in the hope that it might stimulate the patriotism of its citizens, and lead them to a more ready support of their government in the discharge of its difficult and enlarged responsibilities. Book Description
Excerpt from American Consular Jurisdiction in the Orient In reading the correspondence contained in these public documents one cannot fail to appreciate the importance and excellence of the services of our diplomatic and consular representatives. To them has been entrusted the elabora tion of the American foreign policy and the promotion of American commerce in the Orient, the high character and success of which in the hundred years and more of their existence is generally known. How much our ministers and consuls have individually achieved toward this general result we may know only in the more conspicuous cases, but we may look with pride upon their accumulated contributions to the national honor and welfare. The Principles of American Diplomacy (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Bassett Moore
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331058021
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 502

Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of American Diplomacy The present work incorporates substantially the entire text, with few alterations or amendments, of the volume published by the author in 1905 under the title American Diplomacy: Its Spirit and Achievements. The narrative in that volume, however, embraces few incidents that occurred later than 1903. The years that have since elapsed have been marked by important events, some of which are destined to be highly influential in shaping the future course of the foreign policy of the United States. The present work brings the history of that policy down to date. The object of the author in the preparation of the original work, as well as in its revision, has been to set forth and explain the fundamental principles by which the diplomacy of the United States has been governed. Domestic policy and foreign policy are seldom wholly diverse, and foreign policy is in the main profoundly influenced by local interests and ideals. Consequently, just as the internal development of each nation presents some distinctive phase or phases, so we may expect its foreign policy to bear distinctive marks by which it can be identified. Book Description
Excerpt from American Diplomacy This book is intended as a comprehensive and balanced, though brief, review of the history of American diplomacy. It is hoped that it will prove useful both to the student in the classroom and to the general reader, and will help to diffuse a knowledge of our diplomacy at a time when it is becoming increasingly important that public opinion should be internationally minded. While it is for the most part based upon an independent study of the sources, it is not presented as a contribution to knowledge but rather as a condensation of ascertained conclusions. The footnotes, therefore, contain few specific references to support the text, but rather suggest to the reader material for further study; either the more important sources, which in the case of dip lomatic history are exceptionally readable, or those accounts and monographs which are most useful.
