American Artists On Art

American Artists On Art PDF Author:
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429973829
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
From the Preface: The fact that so much of modern art has devoted itself to the exploration and assertion of its own identity is reflected in, but does not explain, the increasing amount of writing and talking on the part of contemporary artists. Rather, the whole history of the changing role of art and artists in a democratic, industrial, and technological society stands behind the spate of artists' words and the public's hunger for them--even some of the general public out there beyond art's little circle. Statements by artists appeal somewhat the way drawings do: they bring us, or at least they hold the promise of bringing us, closer to the artist's thoughts and feelings and to an understanding of his or her modus operandi; they hold the keys to a mysterious realm. And sometimes they offer us the sheer pleasure of good reading. Such is the primary raison d'etre of this book. Its other motivation is educational, and stems from the frustrating lack, in teaching contemporary art, of any single compilation of statements by American artists from 1940 to the present.... This anthology differs in several respects from those others that do include documents of American art since 1940.... The selection I have made is devoted exclusively to statements of artists; it is limited to the last four decades; it presents in a single volume a representative and fairly comprehensive coverage of major developments in American art beginning with Abstract Expressionism; and, whenever possible, it cities the first, or among the very earliest, documents signalizing a shift in the definition, intent, or direction of art."

Book Description
"This book will provide the first comprehensive and critical overview of Associated American Artists (AAA), the commercial enterprise best known as the publisher of prints by Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. It addresses not only AAA's storied involvement in the sale of American prints via mail-order catalogue, but also its ongoing promotion of American art in a range of mediums over six decades. Through aggressive marketing of studio prints, reproductions of art, ceramics and textiles, and associations with corporate advertisers, AAA sought to bring "original" American art over the threshold of every American home"--

Art Subjects

Art Subjects PDF Author: Howard Singerman
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520921437
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
Nearly every artist under the age of fifty in the United States today has a Master of Fine Arts degree. Howard Singerman's thoughtful study is the first to place that degree in its proper historical framework and ideological context. Arguing that where artists are trained makes a difference in the forms and meanings they produce, he shows how the university, with its disciplined organization of knowledge and demand for language, played a critical role in the production of modernism in the visual arts. Now it is shaping what we call postmodernism: like postmodernist art, the graduate university stresses theory and research over manual skills and traditional techniques of representation. Singerman, who holds an M.F.A. in sculpture as well as a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies, is interested in the question of the artist as a "professional" and what that word means for and about the fashioning of artists. He begins by examining the first campus-based art schools in the 1870s and goes on to consider the structuring role of women art educators and women students; the shift from the "fine arts" to the "visual arts"; the fundamental grammar of art laid down in the schoolroom; and the development of professional art training in the American university. Singerman's book reveals the ways we have conceived of art in the past hundred years and have institutionalized that conception as atelier activity, as craft, and finally as theory and performance.

The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists PDF Author: Ann Lee Morgan
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198029551
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
With the advent of abstract expressionism in the 1940s, America became the white hot center of the artistic universe. Now, in The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists, the first such volume to appear in three decades, Ann Lee Morgan offers an informative, insightful, and long overdue resource on our nation's artistic heritage. Featuring 945 alphabetically arranged entries, here is an indispensable biographical and critical guide to American art from colonial times to contemporary postmodernism. Readers will find a wealth of factual detail and insightful analysis of the leading American painters, ranging from John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, and Mary Cassatt to such modern masters as Jackson Pollack, Romare Bearden, and Andy Warhol. Morgan offers razor-sharp entries on sculptors ranging from Alexander Calder to Louise Nevelson, on photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Man Ray, Walker Evans, and Ansel Adams, and on contemporary installation artists, including video master Bill Viola. In addition, the dictionary provides entries on important individuals connected to the art scene, including collectors such as Peggy Guggenheim and critics such as Clement Greenberg. Morgan also examines notable American institutions, organizations, schools, techniques, styles, and movements. The range of coverage is indeed impressive, but equally important is the quality of analysis that appears in entry after entry. Morgan gives readers a wealth of trustworthy and authoritative information as well as perceptive, well-informed criticism of artists and their work. In addition, the book is thoroughly cross-referenced, so readers can easily find additional information on any topic of interest. Beautifully written, filled with fascinating historical background and penetrating insight, The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists is an essential one-volume resource for art lovers everywhere.

American Artists in Their New York Studios

American Artists in Their New York Studios PDF Author: Stephan Götz
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
"This book is a collection of interviews that reveals the diversity of techniques employed by important artists of the past two decades. Not only do the artists yield insights into the actual creative process, but some of the most immediate questions about the conservation of contemporary art also come to light." "Since there has been increasing concern about the preservation of contemporary art, the author contends that the use of many different materials 'poses a great challenge' to the conservator." "Forced to seek new interpretations, Stephan Gotz, a conservator himself, directly confronts twenty-six New York artists in their studios. In each interview Gotz transforms the artist into a specialist who offers us a very personal and subjective view of his/her art. Each artist presents a diversity of new and accepted techniques." "A prefatory note by Robert Lue establishes the context for each interview and a reproduction of a recent or important work by the artist is included."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
