El proceso de internacionalización de las empresas españolas en América Latina se circunscribe a un periodo de fuerte desregulación, liberalización y privatización en ambas zonas. Al mismo tiempo, desde un punto de vista macroeconómico, mientras en España se gozaba de un periodo de bonanza económica, en América Latina existían graves desequilibrios que desembocaron en crisis. Las más relevantes fueron: la de México en 1994, la de Brasil en 1998, y la de Argentina, en 2001. El presente trabajo trata de identificar el efecto de tales vaivenes económicos en el proceso de internacionalización, centrándose en: el sector financiero, con sus máximos representantes el Grupo Santander y el BBVA; el sector energético, destacando Iberdrola y Repsol; y el sector de las telecomunicaciones, con clara alusión a Telefónica. Se concluye, por tanto, que las crisis de los principales países latinoamericanos apenas han influido en las empresas españolas que optaron por internacionalizarse, únicamente en el caso de Argentina se produjo alguna desinversión en operaciones de poco calado. This publication develops a simple appreciative model, which explores some of the issues faced by structural reforms, technological gaps and economic development in Latin America. The first section introduces the issues and provides an overview of the publication. Section two introduces a brief view as to how the evolutionary approach should be adapted to analyze the impact of recent structural reforms upon the specialization pattern and technological capabilities accumulated in so called developing economies. Section three provides a simple macro-to-micro model of the stabilization cum structural reform process. Sections four and five are devoted to investigating recent changes in the pattern of production specialization of the Latin American economies and the relationship such changes have with the exit and entry of firms.
