Book Description
Excerpt from England to America It is, rather, whether the characters in the narrative have their own reality, and so convince us of their own actions. If, for example, someone with his finger on Shakespeare's play should say to me that Macbeth in such circumstances would not have done so and so, my answer would be that in fact Macbeth did so and there is an end of it. In its own tender and fragile setting Miss Montague's story convinces me in this way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The American in England Feeling that irresistible impulse which prompts a man to perpetrate a book, and having no land of his own on which to amble quietly about and write a work of travels dry-shod, according to the approved method set forth in the motto, the author, as an, only resource, was forced to cross the water, and visit, in his proper person, the country which he proposed to describe. Trained almost from infancy to a profession which rendered connected study almost impossible, and having, only by dint of much perseverance, got what little education has fallen to his share in much the same discursive and vagabond manner that a chicken, gets his breakfast, a kernel of information in one corner and another in the next, he found himself, on mounting to begin his journey, quite unencumbered by any satchell of books such as hung at the crupper of the great Addison. To set out as a teacher of wisdom, with such poor qualifications, was to be destitute indeed Thus situated, yet still impelled by the necessity of writing, the author felt all that remained for him was to forget that any books before his own had ever been written, and, despising the erudition which was beyond his reach, endeavour to see each thing as his own eyes might convey its picture to his mind; and, looking watchfully about him, from the moment of his arrival in the country which was to be the scene of his travels until he should leave it, take as accurate notice as he might of all his impressions, and seek, in simple language, to convey them to his countrymen. The author has simply attempted, then, to give, in the following pages, a faithful narrative of whatever he saw during a visit of a few weeks to England. Thus setting out with promising little that little he will yet exert himself conscientiously to perform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Voice From America to England There are, at the present time, says M. De Tocqueville, two great nations in the world, which seem to tend towards the same end, although they started from different points. I allude to the Russians and the Americans. Both of them have grown up unnoticed and whilst the attention of mankind was directed elsewhere, they have sud denly assumed a most prominent place among the nations. The'world learned their existence and greatness at almost the same time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Plain American in England For years I have wanted to write my autobiography, but there seems to be no precedent for any one to break out in self-praise unless the person is well-known to the public, like Julius Caesar, Mr. Pepys, Booker T. Washington, or Chimmie Fadden. I can hardly expect to rival in interest the personal history of royal and oil kings, but I am sure this sketch of one of the common people has the tales told by Julius surpassed for every-day interest though possibly it will be of less use in the schoolrooms. It's a great comfort, too, to have such a good opportunity for the free and unfettered use of the pronoun "I." Book Description
Excerpt from England and the English From an American Point of View What will you have for breakfast, if, alas, you will have any breakfast the first morning out? Something very light perhaps. These islanders, you soon find, have little regard for lightness. A light dish of eggs in some form, a light roll, fresh butter, coffee and hot milk? Yes, of a sort, but none of them light. You soon forswear coffee for tea, and ere long the passive bulwark of resistance wearies you into eggs and bacon, and cold meat, and jams, for your first meal of the day. Little things are typical. What you want is not refused you, but what they have and like is gradually forced upon you. Thus they govern their colonies. No raising of voices, no useless and prolonged discussion, no heat gen crated, no ridicule of your habits, or eulogy of their own, none of these, but just slow-moving, unchanging, confident bulk!
