Book Description
The Law Library presents the complete text of the Fisheries of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and South Atlantic - Comprehensive Amendment to the Fishery Management Plans of the U.S. Caribbean (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 NMFS issues this final rule to implement a comprehensive amendment prepared by the Caribbean Fishery Management Council (Council) to amend its Reef Fish, Spiny Lobster, Queen Conch, and Coral Fishery Management Plans (FMPs). The comprehensive amendment is designed to ensure the FMPs are fully compliant with the provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson-Stevens Act). This final rule redefines the fishery management units for the FMPs; establishes seasonal closures; imposes gear restrictions and requirements; revises requirements for marking pots and traps; and prohibits the filleting of fish at sea. In addition, the comprehensive amendment establishes biological reference points and stock status criteria; establishes rebuilding schedules and strategies to end overfishing and rebuild overfished stocks; provides for standardized collection of bycatch data; minimizes bycatch and bycatch mortality to the extent practicable; designates essential fish habitat (EFH) and EFH habitat areas of particular concern (HAPCs); and minimizes adverse impacts on such habitat to the extent practicable. The intended effect of this final rule is to achieve optimum yield in the fisheries and provide social and economic benefits associated with maintaining healthy stocks. Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management

Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management PDF Author: Jason S. Link
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019284346X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 713

Book Description
"By examining a suite of over 90 indicators for nine major U.S. fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, Link and Marshak systematically track the progress the U.S. has made toward advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and making it an operational reality. Covering a range of socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria, they evaluate progress toward EBFM in the U.S., covering a wide range of longitude, latitude, and parts of major ocean basins, representing over 10% of the world’s ocean surface area. They view progress toward the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight lessons learned from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Though much work remains, significant progress has been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources"--Publisher's description.

Book Description
"The 2011 Caribbean ACL Amendment to the Fishery Management Plans (FMPs) for the Reef Fish, Spiny Lobster, Queen Conch resources and Corals and Reef Associated Plants and Invertebrates in the U.S. Caribbean is intended to bring those fisheries into compliance with the 2007 revisions to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). Actions analyzed in this Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) include alternatives to: 1) revise management reference points and overfished and overfishing status determination criteria; 2) implement annual catch limits (ACLs) and accountability measures (AMs) to prevent overfishing pursuant to MSA National Standard 1 Guidelines; 3) revise management measures for aquarium trade species and conch species within the Reef Fish, Corals and Reef and Associated Plants and Invertebrates and Queen Conch FMPs; 4) establish recreational bag limits for reef fish and spiny lobster species; 5) establish exclusive economic zone sub-boundaries for purposes of applying accountability measures (AMs); and 6) establish framework procedures to facilitate future modifications to National Standard 1 harvest parameters and management measures if needed"--Executive summary (page 21).
