Meanwhile exploitative workplace practices have created a new serfdom, leaving many people trapped in unfulfilling, underpaid work. At a time of huge political upheaval and ever-increasing inequality, this powerful new book asks: how can we build a successful economy, powered by a happy and productive workforce that benefits everyone in the twenty-first century?

Radical Ambition

Radical Ambition PDF Author: Dan Geary
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 9780520943445
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Sociologist, social critic, and political radical C. Wright Mills (1916-1962) was one of the leading public intellectuals in twentieth century America. Offering an important new understanding of Mills and the times in which he lived, Radical Ambition challenges the captivating caricature that has prevailed of him as a lone rebel critic of 1950s complacency. Instead, it places Mills within broader trends in American politics, thought, and culture. Indeed, Daniel Geary reveals that Mills shared key assumptions about American society even with those liberal intellectuals who were his primary opponents. The book also sets Mills firmly within the history of American sociology and traces his political trajectory from committed supporter of the Old Left labor movement to influential herald of an international New Left. More than just a biography, Radical Ambition illuminates the career of a brilliant thinker whose life and works illustrate both the promise and the dilemmas of left-wing social thought in the United States.

A History of European Housing in Australia

A History of European Housing in Australia PDF Author: Patrick Troy
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521777339
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
This collection of essays, first published in 2000, was the first systematic attempt to explain the social, administrative, technical and cultural history of 'European' housing in Australia. Written by a collaborative team of scholars from a wide range of disciplines, it explains how Australian housing has evolved from the ideas brought by the first settlers, and what makes Australian housing distinctive in social terms. This book covers a broad range of topics including the ways in which houses reflect social values and aspirations, the relationship between houses and gardens, the home as a site of domestic production and consumption, and an exploration of how housing provides the basis for developing a sense of community. The book will be invaluable for students of urban affairs and those engaged in housing and the design professions, as well as policy-makers and analysts in the public and private sectors.

Service Families Accomodation

Service Families Accomodation PDF Author: Great Britain. National Audit Office
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9780102954623
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has over 50,000 properties across the United Kingdom, providing housing for around 42,000 Service personnel and their families. A survey has revealed that, while 52 per cent of Service families feel their accommodation is in a good condition, 31 per cent are dissatisfied with the condition of their property. The MOD is currently undertaking a programme to upgrade Service family accommodation. In the last two years it has upgraded some 1,700 properties and will continue upgrading an average of 800 per year. At the current rate of upgrade, it would take some 20 years before all properties reached condition 1 (the highest of four standards). Each year there are over 20,000 Service family moves. Families were satisfied with the move out process, but less satisfied when moving in to a new property, with complaints about the state of carpets, the general condition, the standard of cleaning. Usually the accommodation is not seen before moving in, and personal family circumstances could be taken more into account when accommodation is allocated. The repairs service, run on a single contract in England and Wales, also came in for criticism from families. The MOD's provision of housing reflects better value for money than renting from the open market, but the current housing stock has been acquired over many years and in many cases is in the wrong location to meet demand. There is a shortage of properties for larger families. But the MOD also has 9,170 vacant properties. This is 18 per cent of its housing stock (against a target of 10 per cent), and vacant properties cost an average £4,200 each per year.
