A myriad of anthropogenic activities continue to fuel declines in global wildlife numbers as well as species diversity, while elevating the need for zoos - modern-day arks ensuring the propagation of threatened and endangered species. Zoos aim to instill the value of conservation in their guests, and many choose to utilize animal ambassadors, who participate in educational programs that "touch the hearts to teach the minds." Adjacent research focused on environmental stressors and welfare suggests that while welfare can be positively or negatively impacted by environmental factors, individual variation plays a big role in mediating these effects. In the summer of 2020, nine African penguins, some that serve as ambassador animals, were set to experience major environmental changes due to the reintroduction of conspecifics, the visitation to a new habitat on public view, and the interruption of their normal educational programming schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium partnered with The Ohio State University's Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research and Education to proactively assess the effects of these changes on the penguins' welfare. The main purpose of this study was to provide data to animal care staff on the animals' baselines, how they responded to the environmental changes, and ultimately how they acclimated. Furthermore, this study utilized five measures frequently used to assess animal welfare (behavioral observation, behavioral diversity, urofecal corticosterone monitoring, personality assessment, and a novel object test) and aimed to investigate the relationships these measures have with each other. The treatment for this study was the combination of introducing the penguins to a new social group and to a new habitat. All measures were collected before and after the treatment was implemented. The personality assessments had good inter-rater reliability; however, there were mixed results when comparing their correlations to similar behavioral observations. Principal component analysis uncovered three similar personality components both pre- and post-treatment: Unsociable, Curious, and Aggressive. Behavioral diversity and urofecal corticosterone levels showed no change post-treatment. General Linear Modeling revealed an increase in aggressive behaviors observed post-treatment as well as a subsequent decline. These results fulfilled the aim of this study, which was to inform animal care staff of the observed impacts the treatment had on the penguins' welfare. Regarding the secondary purpose, analyses of my five measures did reveal significant correlations, suggesting that some of the measures may be assessing overlapping or underlying phenomena. Ultimately, understanding the individual differences between animals as well as the tools I used to assess animal welfare is crucial to improving animals' well-being, health, and reproductive success, ensuring that zoos can continue to help conserve threatened and endangered species.
