ISBN: 0892368896
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
In the 1720s and 1730s, Jean-Baptiste Oudry established himself as the preeminent painter in France of hunts, animals, still lifes, and landscapes. Oudry’s Painted Menagerie focuses on a suite of eleven life-size portraits of exotic animals from the royal menagerie at Versailles, painted by Oudry between 1739 and 1752. These paintings eventually found their way into the ducal collection in Schwerin, Germany. Among them is the magnificent portrait of Clara, an Indian rhinoceros who became a celebrity in mid-eighteenth-century Europe. Her portrait has been out of public view for more than a century, and it is presented here in its newly conserved state.

Fundamentals of Physics

Fundamentals of Physics PDF Author: David Halliday
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780471134602
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The publication of the first edition of Physics in 1960 launched the modern era of physics textbooks. It was a new paradigm then and, after 40 years, it continues to be the dominant model for all texts. The big change in the market has been a shift to a lower level, more accessible version of the model. Fundamentals of Physics is a good example of this shift. In spite of this change, there continues to be a demand for the original version and, indeed, we are seeing a renewed interest in Physics as demographic changes have led to greater numbers of well-prepared students entering university. Physics is the only book available for academics looking to teach a more demanding course.

Striving for Redemption

Striving for Redemption PDF Author: Tio MacDonald
Publisher: East Oakland Times, LLC
ISBN: 9781949576283
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
The stories in this book underscore three underlying patterns in California prisons (the Department). For decades prisoners have been deprived of the rehabilitative programs that could help them transform their lives. The institutions that were referred to in this book reveal rampant and consistent pathology, causing harm to the prisoners, and spreading the threat to society by failing to rehabilitate its wards. This book clearly exhibits that prisons are not "cushy" motels, but are dangerous, mismanaged and criminogenic venues that are not only extremely uncomfortable, but inhumane. The idleness, racism, and other maladaptive behavior that seem part and parcel of the culture of California prisons is winked at by guards and implicitly encouraged by the Department. This malfeasance coupled with the lack of rehabilitative programs offers some understanding and reason for prisoner rebellion and violence. Given the nearly two decades of contrasting success that the Honor Yard/Progressive Programming facility has enjoyed, one could conclude with near certainty that prisoners can commit to personal change if offered consistent programs to help them do so. Indeed, it was the prisoners of the PPF who initiated and designed the program. Since 2000, the Honor Yard/PPF has never suffered a racial riot, has maintained a consistently lower rate of violence, and prides itself on a culture of camaraderie and collective rehabilitation. The PPF demonstrates that prisoners want rehabilitative programs and will sincerely utilize them if only given the opportunity.

Chinese Occultism

Chinese Occultism PDF Author: Paul Carus
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 3749434638
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 55

Book Description
At the beginning of Chinese history stands a tablet which in some mysterious way is supposed to be connected with an explanation of the universe. It has been reconstructed by later Chinese thinkers and is pictured in the hands of Fuh-Hi as an arrangement of the kwa figures preserved in the Yih King. Considering the several traces of Babylonian traditions in ancient Chinese literature and folklore, would it not be justifiable to identify the tablet of Fuh-Hi with the ancient Babylonian "Tablet of Destiny" mentioned in the Enmeduranki Text, a copy of which was discovered in the archives of Asurbanipal 20 and was said to contain the "Mystery of Heaven and Earth?"
